Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon organisers announce revised route amid protests

The organisers of the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon have adjusted the race route to avoid areas currently affected by ongoing public protests in the capital.

Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon organisers announce revised route amid protests

Organisers of the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon have officially announced a revised route for this year's edition of the race, which is scheduled to take place this Sunday. The decision follows ongoing protests in the city that have necessitated heavy police security measures.

The updated course will bypass specific locations that were part of the traditional route, including Rail Bhawan, Sansad Marg, and Patel Chowk. These areas have been subject to significant police barricading due to demonstrations demanding the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner.

According to the official statement released on Friday, a minor revision will be implemented between the 10 km and 13 km marks. Runners will now turn left from Kartavya Path towards Seva Teerth Circle, followed by a turn onto Maulana Azad Road.

After completing a U-turn, participants will proceed around Seva Teerth Circle towards Rafi Marg before turning right to rejoin the original Kartavya Path route. Additionally, the race will no longer commence from the previously designated start point at Sansad Marg.

The elite half-marathon race, which covers a distance of 21.09 km, is set to begin at 5:18 am for the men’s field. The women’s elite race is scheduled to follow shortly after, with a start time of 5:20 am.

The event features a competitive field of international and domestic athletes. Two-time winner Birhanu Legese is set to headline the men’s division, while the 2022 champion, Irene Chepet Cheptai, is among the primary attractions in the women’s race.

In total, 22 men and 20 women from India are confirmed to participate in the elite categories. Organisers have confirmed that all participants have been notified of the route changes through email, social media, and direct communication at the event Expo.

The Open 10K race will proceed as planned, starting from the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. However, there has been a schedule adjustment for the Champions with Disability Run and the Senior Citizens’ Run, which will now flag off at 6:30 am instead of 7:00 am.

The Great Delhi Run, another key component of the event, will remain unaffected by these changes. Organisers confirmed that there are no modifications to the route or the start timings for that specific category.

The Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon remains one of the most significant road running events in the region, drawing thousands of participants annually. The adjustments reflect the organisers' commitment to ensuring the safety and smooth conduct of the race despite external challenges.

Participants are encouraged to arrive early and follow the updated signage provided along the revised course. The event management team continues to coordinate with local authorities to ensure that all logistical requirements are met ahead of the Sunday morning start.

The race has historically served as a platform for both elite athletes and recreational runners to test their endurance. Despite the logistical hurdles presented by the current situation in Delhi, the organisers are focused on delivering a successful event for all registered runners.

The decision to skip the protest-affected zones was made to avoid potential disruptions and to ensure that the race flow remains uninterrupted. By rerouting through Seva Teerth Circle and Maulana Azad Road, the event maintains its standard distance and competitive integrity.

As the city prepares for the event, security remains a priority for the local administration. The organisers have expressed their appreciation for the cooperation of the participants and the authorities in facilitating these necessary changes on such short notice.

The Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon continues to be a major fixture on the Indian athletics calendar. With the route finalized and participants informed, the focus now shifts to the race day performance of the elite field and the thousands of amateur runners expected to participate.

The event organisers have emphasized that all communication channels remain open for any further updates. Runners are advised to check the official event website and their registered email accounts for any last-minute instructions or guidance regarding the race day proceedings.

The atmosphere in the city remains busy as final preparations are completed at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and along the course. The event is expected to proceed as scheduled, provided there are no further changes to the local security situation.

With the elite athletes already in the city, the focus is firmly on the competition. The revised route will offer a slightly different experience for long-time participants, but the core challenge of the half-marathon distance remains unchanged for all involved.

As the clock ticks down to the Sunday morning start, the city’s running community is preparing for a significant day of sport. The organisers remain confident that the event will be a success, highlighting the resilience and dedication of the participants.

The Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon stands as a testament to the popularity of long-distance running in India. Through careful planning and effective communication, the organisers have ensured that the event can continue to celebrate athletic achievement in the heart of the capital.
