Sonay Kartal reaches Wuhan Open quarter-finals with victory over Jasmine Paolini

British tennis player Sonay Kartal continued her successful return from injury by defeating 15th seed Jasmine Paolini in straight sets in China.

Sonay Kartal reaches Wuhan Open quarter-finals with victory over Jasmine Paolini

British tennis player Sonay Kartal has advanced to the quarter-finals of the Wuhan Open after securing a dominant straight-sets victory over the 15th-seeded Italian, Jasmine Paolini. The 24-year-old won the match 6-2, 6-0, marking another significant milestone in her return to professional competition.

Kartal, who previously reached a career-high ranking of world number 44, has been sidelined for over six months due to a stress fracture in her back. Her performance against Paolini, a former Wimbledon finalist, demonstrated her return to form and physical fitness following a challenging rehabilitation period.

The match saw Kartal maintain a high level of consistency from the baseline throughout the contest. As Paolini struggled to find her rhythm and committed a series of unforced errors, the British player capitalised on the opportunities to close out the match decisively.

Reflecting on her performance, Kartal noted the necessity of maintaining focus against a high-calibre opponent. She stated that she knew she had to remain solid from the start and avoid letting up, describing the match as a pretty flawless performance from her side.

This victory follows a series of impressive results for Kartal in Wuhan, where she has yet to drop a set. Her path to the quarter-finals included victories over Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina and the 2020 Olympic champion, Belinda Bencic, in the previous round.

Kartal’s comeback has been carefully managed to ensure long-term health. After initially hoping for a rapid recovery, she faced a difficult period where the injury caused significant pain, eventually forcing her to miss the 2025 Wimbledon Championships, where she had reached the fourth round the previous year.

Her return to competitive action began just over three weeks ago while representing Great Britain at the Billie Jean King Cup. Although that initial match resulted in a narrow defeat, Kartal expressed satisfaction with her level of play, noting that she was growing in confidence with every match.

Prior to her injury, the 2026 season had been a breakthrough period for the Briton. She had broken into the world's top 50 and secured notable victories over high-ranked opponents, including 2025 Australian Open champion Madison Keys and Emma Navarro at Indian Wells.

Her progress was halted during a fourth-round encounter against current world number one Elena Rybakina, where the back injury forced her to retire. The subsequent recovery process required difficult decisions to avoid rushing her return to the WTA Tour.

Following her return to the tour, Kartal reached the third round in Beijing before carrying that momentum into the current tournament in Wuhan. She is currently utilising a protected injury ranking to compete in these events.

The victory over Paolini marks the second time this week that Kartal has handed a 6-0 set score to a former top-five player. Her clinical display has solidified her standing as a player to watch as she continues her climb back up the rankings.

Looking ahead, Kartal is scheduled to face Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina in the quarter-finals on Friday. The match represents another stern test for the Briton as she aims to extend her successful run in the tournament.

Elsewhere in professional tennis, Alexander Zverev has continued his strong form at the Shanghai Masters. The German defeated Australia's Alex de Minaur 6-4, 6-4 to reach the semi-finals, confirming his position as the year-end ATP number one.

Zverev is now set to compete against Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina for a place in the Shanghai final. His consistent performance throughout the season has cemented his status as the leading player on the men’s tour.

The Wuhan Open continues to attract top talent, with the field narrowing as the competition reaches its final stages. Kartal’s ability to navigate the draw while managing her physical recovery remains a key narrative of the event.

Kartal’s patient approach to her rehabilitation has been validated by her recent results. By prioritising her long-term fitness over a premature return, she has managed to regain the competitive edge that saw her rise through the rankings earlier in the year.

The tennis community has noted the significance of her comeback, particularly given the severity of her back injury. Her ability to compete at a high level against established seeds like Bencic and Paolini highlights her resilience.

As she prepares for her upcoming match against Svitolina, Kartal will look to maintain the tactical discipline that has served her well in Wuhan. Her recent form suggests she is well-positioned to challenge for a place in the semi-finals.

The Wuhan Open remains a prestigious stop on the WTA calendar, providing crucial ranking points and high-level competition. Kartal’s participation and success in this environment are vital for her goal of re-establishing herself among the world's elite players.

Fans and analysts will be watching closely on Friday to see if Kartal can maintain her momentum. Her journey from injury to the quarter-finals serves as a testament to her dedication and professional approach to the sport.
