New world rally champion Elfyn Evans was greeted by hundreds of supporters during a homecoming celebration in his native Gwynedd. The driver, who hails from Dinas Mawddwy, drove his Toyota rally car to a special stage in Dolgellau to mark his historic achievement.
The event featured a public exhibition where Evans took Wales' First Minister, Rhun ap Iorwerth, for a demonstration drive around the town's main car park. The celebration provided fans with an opportunity to meet the driver for photographs and autographs.
Evans, the first Welsh driver to secure the world title, expressed his gratitude to the local community. He admitted that the reception was surreal, noting that while he is accustomed to crowds at international events, the support at home felt unique.
"I feel very lucky and honoured that the event was arranged," Evans said. "I hope my success helps build some awareness of the sport. It is a small community, but it is a bit of a different reception from the kids."
Despite his newfound status as a world champion, Evans insisted that his daily life remains unchanged. He noted that he still faces the same domestic routines as any other parent, and his professional focus remains entirely on future performance.
"Life at home is exactly the same, we still have the same battles to get the kids to school every morning," he added. "I will continue to give my best, and my approach to the sport won't change."
First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth praised the driver's resilience and consistency. He highlighted the significance of the victory not only for the local area but for the entire nation, describing Evans as a true hero and champion.
"To become a world champion is no mean feat," the First Minister stated. "He has shown such quality over the years, and we are now seeing what this means to the whole of Wales. He is a true champion."
Before reaching the summit of the sport this season, Evans had finished as the runner-up in the world championship on five separate occasions. He is the son of former rally driver Gwyndaf Evans, who helped foster his early interest in the sport.
The championship battle was decided in dramatic fashion during the final rally of the season in Sardinia. Evans' teammate and primary title rival, Oliver Solberg, appeared set to claim the crown before sliding off the track just two corners from the finish.
Earlier in the day, Evans visited his former school, Ysgol Bro Idris, to meet with pupils and staff. The visit allowed students to view the rally car up close and interact with the champion, an experience many described as inspiring.
Local supporters gathered in Eldon Square for the main ceremony, braving persistent rain to celebrate the achievement. Many fans had travelled from across the region to witness the homecoming of the Welsh motorsport star.
Family members were also present to share in the milestone. His aunt, Lowri Edwards, reflected on the years of near-misses, stating that the family was thrilled to finally see him secure the world title after his previous runner-up finishes.
Dolgellau Town Council played a key role in organising the festivities. Deputy Mayor Nia Wyn Evans noted the palpable excitement within the town, describing the atmosphere as a significant moment for the local community.
The World Rally Championship is renowned as one of the most demanding disciplines in motorsport. Drivers must navigate diverse and challenging terrains, ranging from ice and snow to extreme heat, gravel, and asphalt surfaces.
Evans' victory marks the conclusion of an era for the current high-powered Rally1 vehicle specifications. The sport is set to undergo a transition next season as new technical regulations are introduced to the championship.
These upcoming changes aim to encourage more manufacturers to enter the sport by promoting more affordable and sustainable vehicle technology. The shift will present a fresh challenge for all teams as they prepare for the next campaign.
Looking ahead, Evans remains focused on the future of his career. He stated that he is hungry to achieve further success in the sport and is already preparing for the challenge of defending his title under the new regulations.
The homecoming event concluded a significant week for the driver, who has spent his career building towards this championship win. His success has been widely celebrated as a landmark achievement for Welsh sporting history.
As he prepares for the next season, Evans continues to serve as an inspiration to young fans in his home county. His journey from a teenager starting in the sport to a world champion remains a central narrative for his supporters.
