Wales head coach Steve Tandy has announced a 39-strong squad for the upcoming Nations Championship, featuring three uncapped players and the return of several experienced figures. The squad will prepare for November Tests against Japan, New Zealand, and Australia.
The uncapped players earning their first senior call-ups are Dragons centre Aneurin Owen and scrum-half Che Hope, alongside Cardiff loose-head prop Rhys Barratt. Barratt previously featured for the national side in a summer fixture against the Barbarians.
Hooker Dewi Lake has been confirmed as the captain for the autumn campaign. The selection process saw Tandy balance the inclusion of in-form club players with the return of several stars who were unavailable for the July international window.
Addressing the selection of Aneurin Owen, Tandy praised the 26-year-old's consistency. The head coach noted that the centre has been a driving force for the Dragons, demonstrating excellent communication and work ethic throughout the opening weeks of the season.
Che Hope, 23, joins the scrum-half ranks alongside Tomos Williams and Reuben Morgan-Williams. His inclusion comes as Kieran Hardy faces a significant period on the sidelines due to a knee injury, providing Hope with a chance to impress.
The squad also sees the return of several established players. Lock Dafydd Jenkins, tight-head props Tomas Francis and Archie Griffin, hooker Liam Belcher, and centre Louie Hennessey are all back in the fold after missing the summer Tests.
Dragons lock Seb Davies and Cardiff number eight Taine Basham have been recalled to the international setup for the first time under Tandy’s leadership. Basham’s form at the start of the season earned him the nod in the back row.
Tandy highlighted Basham’s impact, stating that the forward has been impressive in his club performances. The coach noted that Basham has settled well into the Cardiff side and brings a dynamic presence to the national squad.
Dragons wing Rio Dyer also earns a recall to the international side, having started the current domestic season in strong form. He is joined in the backline options by Leicester’s Gabriel Hamer-Webb, who returns to the squad.
Despite the positive news for many, there are notable absentees. Leicester flanker Tommy Reffell will miss the campaign due to a knee injury, with an expected recovery timeline of four to six weeks. He will focus on returning for his club.
Veteran number eight Taulupe Faletau also misses out on selection. Although he recently made his first appearance of the season for Cardiff, the coaching staff opted for other back-row options for the upcoming November fixtures.
The squad selection reflects a broad distribution of talent across the regions. There are seven players selected from both Cardiff and Scarlets, six from the Dragons, and four from the Ospreys, alongside 14 players based at English clubs.
Montpellier lock Adam Beard is the sole representative from outside the UK domestic leagues. The coaching staff has confirmed that Taine Plumtree and Joe Hawkins will remain with the Scarlets for their upcoming fixture in South Africa this weekend.
Liam Belcher’s inclusion as the third hooker behind Lake and Ryan Elias comes at the expense of Elliot Dee. Despite Dee being the leading try scorer in the United Rugby Championship, the selectors opted for Belcher’s current form.
Tandy expressed his satisfaction with the depth of the squad, noting that the return of unavailable players combined with the strong performances of others has created a competitive environment ahead of the challenging November schedule.
The Nations Championship represents a critical period for Wales as they look to build momentum. Following the home Tests in Cardiff, the team will conclude their campaign at Twickenham for the tournament's finals weekend.
The inclusion of younger talents like Owen and Hope signals a focus on rewarding domestic form. Tandy emphasized that the coaching staff has been monitoring the training standards and match-day contributions of players across all professional clubs.
The forward pack features a mix of experience and emerging talent, with the likes of Aaron Wainwright, Jac Morgan, and James Botham providing significant depth. The coaching team will look to integrate these players during the preparation camp.
The backline options include a variety of tactical choices, with Sam Costelow and Dan Edwards competing for the fly-half role. The midfield remains competitive, with Joe Hawkins, Eddie James, and Max Llewellyn vying for starting positions.
Wales will now look toward their opening fixture, aiming to translate their club-level form into international success. The squad will convene shortly to begin intensive preparations for the high-intensity matches against southern hemisphere opposition.
