Rasmussen shines as Rays defeat Guardians to take 3-2 ALCS lead

The Tampa Bay Rays moved within one victory of reaching the World Series on Sunday night, earning a hard-fought 3-1 victory over the Cleveland Guardians in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series at Progressive Field.

Starting pitcher Drew Rasmussen delivered a commanding performance on the mound for the visitors, allowing just one run across seven stellar innings to give his side a crucial 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series.

The vital victory puts Tampa Bay on the verge of claiming their third American League pennant in franchise history, with Game 6 scheduled to take place on Monday night back home at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg.

Tampa Bay established early control of the contest by scoring single runs in each of the first three innings against Cleveland's pitching staff, taking advantage of consistent offensive pressure throughout the opening stages of the matchup.

Yandy Diaz spearheaded the visiting offense, recording three hits and consistently setting the tone at the top of the batting order as Tampa Bay's leadoff hitters reached base safely in six different innings during the game.

In the opening frame, Diaz put the Rays ahead immediately by launching a sharp line-drive double over center fielder Petey Halpin, advancing all the way to the outfield wall to set up an early scoring opportunity.

Diaz subsequently came around to score when Cleveland starting pitcher Parker Messick issued a bases-loaded walk to Jonny DeLuca, handing Tampa Bay an early lead before the Guardians could record the third out of the inning.

The Rays doubled their advantage in the second inning when Jonathan Aranda stroked a single to drive home Ben Williamson after Tampa Bay once again got their leadoff batter aboard safely against the struggling home pitching staff.

Tampa Bay extended their lead to 3-0 in the third frame when Liam Hicks looped a curveball from relief pitcher Tim Herrin into center field, allowing Chandler Simpson to score easily from base.

The sustained offensive pressure from Tampa Bay was evident right from the start, with their opening batters reaching base in each of the first four innings to establish complete control over the game's tactical tempo.

Rasmussen was in dominant form on the mound, holding the Guardians' lineup to just four hits and one walk while registering six strikeouts during an efficient and polished 90-pitch outing for the visiting side.

After surrendering a two-out single to Chase DeLauter in the opening inning, the 31-year-old right-hander retired nine consecutive Cleveland batters to quickly extinguish any early home momentum and settle into a smooth rhythm.

Rasmussen carries an impressive postseason record, now standing at 2-0 with a stingy 1.29 earned run average across three playoff starts this autumn, during which he has struck out 23 batters while walking only three.

Cleveland finally managed to break through against Rasmussen in the seventh inning when Steven Kwan and Jose Ramirez hit back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners with no outs on the scoreboard.

DeLauter then brought Kwan home with an RBI single grounded between first and second base, cutting Tampa Bay's lead to 3-1, but Rasmussen dug deep to limit further damage and keep his team in front.

For Parker Messick, the 25-year-old Cleveland starter, it proved a difficult and short outing as he lasted just two innings, permitting two runs, five hits, and three walks while throwing only 34 strikes from 57 pitches.

Messick's early exit marked the shortest outing of his major league career and the second time in four postseason starts that the left-hander failed to make it past the third inning of play.

Tampa Bay's bullpen cleanly finished the game in relief of Rasmussen, with Cam Booser and Tyler Wells combining for a scoreless eighth inning that ended with Wells striking out Ramirez to strand a runner.

Bryan Baker entered the contest in the ninth inning to secure the final three outs, successfully converting his 35th consecutive save opportunity and his fifth of the current postseason campaign for the visitors.

Despite the defeat, Kwan produced notable defensive highlights for Cleveland, throwing out Taylor Walls at home plate in the fourth inning and making a spectacular leaping catch at the center-field wall in the eighth.

Historical trends favor Tampa Bay heading into Monday's fixture, as road teams taking a 3-2 series lead in Game 5 of a League Championship Series have advanced to the World Series four out of five times since 1985.

Should Cleveland manage to bounce back and force a deciding match, Game 7 will take place on Tuesday at Tropicana Field, with the series winner scheduled to meet the National League champion Milwaukee Brewers in the Fall Classic.
