The Oregon Ducks suffered a narrow 17-15 defeat against the UCLA Bruins on Saturday, a result that has prompted head coach Dan Lanning to announce a comprehensive evaluation of his team’s offensive strategy moving forward.
Quarterback Dylan Raiola struggled significantly during the contest, completing only six of his 19 pass attempts for 43 yards. The signal-caller endured a difficult outing, recording two interceptions and losing one fumble before being benched.
Lanning acknowledged the poor performance of his quarterback but also accepted responsibility for the team's lack of preparation. He stated, "He wasn't good enough today. I think he can acknowledge that. But we didn't prepare him to be good enough today."
The coach further noted that the coaching staff failed to put the players in positions to succeed. He added, "We didn't put him in positions to have the success he needs to have. We need the best version of Dylan moving forward."
Raiola had previously earned praise for his performance two weeks ago against USC, where he stepped in for the injured Dante Moore to lead the Ducks to a victory, throwing for 289 yards and two touchdowns.
However, against the 5-0 Bruins, the offense failed to find any rhythm. Lanning eventually turned to third-string quarterback Brock Thomas to start the fourth quarter in an attempt to spark a comeback for the home side.
Thomas provided a brief lift for the Ducks, completing 11 passes and throwing for a touchdown that brought the team back into contention. Lanning admitted that the coaching staff could have made the change earlier in the contest.
Reflecting on the decision to switch quarterbacks, Lanning said, "Certainly, after the last turnover, it was, 'Hey, we've got to put somebody in there who's going to have success.' Brock went in and operated well."
The defeat leaves the Ducks with a 3-2 overall record and a 1-1 standing in the Big Ten. Lanning emphasized that the entire offensive unit, rather than just the quarterback position, is under intense scrutiny following the loss.
The head coach did not rule out potential changes to the coaching staff, including the role of first-year offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer. He confirmed that every aspect of the offensive operation is currently under review by the staff.
"We weren't successful on offense in any phase tonight," Lanning stated. "I definitely have to evaluate the game first and go back and look at it. We didn't have success on offense, so you have to look at all things."
Lanning noted that the team's performance in practice must also be examined. He questioned whether the issues stemmed from the play-calling or the way the team operated during their preparation sessions leading up to the game.
The status of primary starter Dante Moore remains a critical question for the program. Moore has been sidelined with a concussion, and his return to the starting lineup is currently uncertain despite his recent progress at training.
Lanning provided an update on Moore’s progress, noting that the quarterback has returned to practice and has been throwing in pads. However, the staff is prioritizing player safety above immediate results in the current campaign.
"It's an ongoing discussion. From the beginning, we've said we're going to move with an abundance of caution and continue to get evaluations," Lanning explained regarding the timeline for Moore's return to the field for the Ducks.
The coach remained non-committal about when Moore might be cleared for game action, stating it would be unfair to speculate. He noted that the team will continue to monitor the situation closely through ongoing medical evaluations.
The loss to UCLA represents a significant setback for the Ducks, who were ranked 13th entering the matchup. The Bruins, meanwhile, improved to 3-0 in conference play with this victory, maintaining their undefeated start to the season.
As the team prepares for upcoming fixtures, the focus will remain on stabilizing the offensive unit. Lanning indicated that the team must improve how they operate in practice to translate success to game days in the future.
The coaching staff is expected to spend the coming days analyzing film and addressing the turnover issues that plagued the team against UCLA. The goal is to identify the best path forward for the remainder of the season.
With the Big Ten schedule intensifying, the Ducks face pressure to rectify their offensive struggles quickly. The upcoming week will be pivotal for determining the starting quarterback and the offensive game plan for their next outing.
