Oklahoma City Thunder dismiss eligibility challenge regarding rookie Aday Mara

The Oklahoma City Thunder have rejected claims from Spanish club Basket Zaragoza that rookie Aday Mara remains under contract and is ineligible to play in the NBA.

Oklahoma City Thunder dismiss eligibility challenge regarding rookie Aday Mara

The Oklahoma City Thunder have formally dismissed a challenge to the eligibility of their rookie center Aday Mara, following claims from his former Spanish club, Basket Zaragoza, that they still hold his playing rights. The dispute surfaced publicly on Friday, just days before the start of the 2026-27 NBA regular season.

Basket Zaragoza issued a statement asserting that Mara remains under a valid contract with the club through the 2026-27 season. The Spanish side indicated they have not received a request for an international transfer and intend to take legal action to protect their interests regarding the player's departure.

In response to the club's position, a spokesperson for the Oklahoma City Thunder maintained that the rookie is fully eligible to participate in the NBA. The team stated that Mara's three-year tenure in the NCAA system exempts him from needing further clearance from his former European club.

The Thunder spokesperson clarified that the team has been advised by the NBA that no international transfer documentation is required for Mara. This stance suggests the franchise is confident that the player's transition to the professional league is legally sound and will not be obstructed.

Mara, a 7-foot-3 center, was selected by Oklahoma City with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. His selection followed a successful collegiate career that included two seasons at UCLA and a standout campaign at the University of Michigan.

During his time at Michigan, Mara established himself as a dominant interior presence, earning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors. His performance at the collegiate level was instrumental in the team's run to the national championship last season.

The rookie has already made a significant impression on the Thunder coaching staff during the preseason. Mara averaged 13.4 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game, shooting an efficient 78.8% from the floor across his appearances.

His versatility and rim protection have positioned him as a key component of Oklahoma City’s deep center rotation. He is expected to provide support alongside established starters Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein, as well as bench contributor Jaylin Williams.

This is not the first time Basket Zaragoza has contested Mara's status. When the player moved to the United States in 2023 to join UCLA, the club argued that he was in breach of his youth contract and sought financial compensation exceeding $600,000.

At that time, the club's general manager, Jose Artigas, publicly questioned the ethics of the situation, suggesting that the player’s move undermined contractual obligations. Despite those objections, Mara was cleared to play for the Bruins at the start of the 2023-24 season.

The current dispute highlights the ongoing complexities surrounding the movement of young international talent into the American collegiate and professional systems. FIBA regulations generally govern international transfers, but the intersection with NCAA eligibility often creates friction.

Zaragoza’s management reiterated their commitment to developing youth talent while emphasizing their obligation to defend the club's rights. They have formally communicated their position to FIBA, the Spanish Basketball Federation, the NBA, and the Thunder organization.

The Thunder organization remains focused on their upcoming season opener despite the legal posturing from Spain. The team has been preparing for a competitive campaign, bolstered by a roster that features a mix of veteran experience and high-potential youth.

The situation remains a point of interest for the league, as teams frequently navigate the nuances of international contracts. For now, Oklahoma City is proceeding as if Mara will be available for selection when the regular season tips off.

The Thunder have been active in the preseason, managing a roster that has also faced challenges, including the recent loss of rookie Otega Oweh to a season-ending Achilles injury. The addition of Mara is seen as vital to their defensive depth.

As the NBA season approaches, the focus for the Thunder will be on integrating their new lottery pick into the rotation. The team's coaching staff has praised Mara's ability to adapt to the pace and physicality of the professional game.

The legal claims from Zaragoza have not yet resulted in any injunctions that would prevent Mara from taking the court. The Thunder’s firm stance indicates they believe the player’s status is settled under current league and international guidelines.

Observers will be watching closely to see if Basket Zaragoza pursues further litigation or if the matter is resolved through mediation. For the moment, the Thunder are treating the controversy as an external distraction to their basketball operations.

Mara’s development continues to be a priority for Oklahoma City, with the organization viewing him as a long-term asset. His ability to contribute immediately on both ends of the floor was a primary factor in his selection during the draft.

With the regular season set to begin, the Thunder are expected to continue their preparations. The team will look to leverage their depth and tactical versatility to compete at the highest level in the Western Conference.
