New Zealand Cricket abandons plans for Major League Cricket expansion

New Zealand Cricket has officially withdrawn from its proposed partnership to establish a franchise in the American Major League Cricket tournament.

New Zealand Cricket abandons plans for Major League Cricket expansion

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has confirmed that it will not proceed with its planned expansion into Major League Cricket (MLC). The governing body announced on Tuesday that it has ended its bid to launch a franchise in the United States, citing concerns over the current timing for such an international venture.

The decision marks a significant shift in strategy for the organisation, which had previously entered into a partnership with True North Sports Ventures in April 2025. The initial agreement was intended to facilitate the entry of a New Zealand-backed team into the American league, with an anticipated debut for the 2027 season.

NZC chief executive officer Geoff Allott stated that while the American market presents long-term potential, the board determined that now is not the appropriate moment to commit to the project. The organisation has opted to prioritise domestic development over international expansion.

"There is plenty of potential in the American market, however following further evaluation of the opportunity, we do not think the timing is right for us to be taking this on," Allott said in an official statement regarding the withdrawal.

The board emphasised that its primary focus remains on strengthening the domestic game within New Zealand. This includes refining high-performance environments for its national teams and players, ensuring that resources are concentrated on local infrastructure and talent development.

Allott further confirmed that the governing body had not committed any capital to the partnership with True North Sports Ventures prior to this decision. This ensures that the cancellation of the project will not have a direct financial impact on the organisation's current reserves.

The proposed expansion had been in the early stages of planning, with initial discussions exploring potential host cities such as Toronto and Atlanta. There had also been long-term considerations regarding the possibility of adding a second team to the league by 2031.

Major League Cricket, which launched in 2023, currently operates with six franchises based in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Texas, and Washington DC. The league has previously stated its intention to expand the competition to a total of 10 teams.

The American league has sought to establish a footprint in the North American market by attracting international talent and forming partnerships with established cricket boards. The withdrawal of NZC represents a setback for the league's growth ambitions in the short term.

New Zealand Cricket remains committed to its existing international obligations and the development of its domestic structure. By stepping back from the MLC project, the board aims to ensure that its resources are fully aligned with its core mission of supporting New Zealand cricket.

The decision reflects a broader trend among international cricket boards to carefully evaluate the risks and rewards of investing in emerging markets. While the US market is viewed as a growth opportunity, the financial and operational demands of such ventures are substantial.

NZC has not indicated any plans to revisit the partnership in the near future, suggesting that the focus will remain entirely on the domestic high-performance programme. The organisation will continue to monitor the global landscape while prioritising its local interests.

The Major League Cricket organisation has not yet issued a formal response regarding the impact of New Zealand's withdrawal on its expansion timeline. The league continues to operate its current six-team structure as it looks toward future development.

Cricket fans in New Zealand will now look toward the upcoming domestic season and the national team's international schedule. The board's decision to concentrate on local high-performance environments is expected to be a central theme in its future strategic planning.

The withdrawal concludes a period of speculation regarding the potential for a New Zealand-branded team in the American competition. NZC has clarified its position, effectively closing the chapter on this specific international expansion effort for the time being.

As the sport continues to evolve globally, the balance between international commercial opportunities and domestic stability remains a key challenge for governing bodies. New Zealand Cricket's move highlights the importance of strategic alignment in an increasingly competitive sporting landscape.

The organisation's commitment to its players and teams remains the cornerstone of its operations. By avoiding the complexities of an American franchise, NZC aims to maintain its focus on the success of its national programmes on the international stage.

With the partnership officially terminated, all parties involved are expected to move forward independently. The focus for New Zealand Cricket now returns to its established pathways and the ongoing development of its cricket infrastructure at home.

The announcement provides clarity for stakeholders who had been following the potential expansion. NZC's transparent approach regarding the lack of capital investment underscores its cautious approach to international commercial ventures during this period.

The future of Major League Cricket will likely continue to be a subject of interest as it seeks to grow its presence in the United States. For now, however, New Zealand Cricket will not be a part of those expansion plans.
