Michigan Retains Underwood as Quarterback and Beck as Play-Caller

Michigan Retains Underwood as Quarterback and Beck as Play-Caller

Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham has confirmed that Bryce Underwood will continue as the team's starting quarterback. The decision follows an internal review conducted during the Wolverines' recent open week to address offensive inconsistencies and evaluate team performance.

Alongside the decision to stick with Underwood, Whittingham announced that Jason Beck will remain in his role as offensive coordinator and primary play-caller. The coaching staff is focusing on stabilizing the unit after a challenging start to the season.

The announcement comes in the wake of a disappointing 20-14 defeat against Minnesota on October 3. During that contest, the Michigan offense struggled significantly, managing only a single touchdown and accumulating just 180 total yards of total offense.

Whittingham had previously described the performance against Minnesota as unacceptable, noting that the team committed three turnovers. He had hinted that difficult personnel and strategic decisions might be necessary to improve the team's overall output moving forward.

Despite the pressure to make changes, Whittingham expressed confidence in the current setup. He stated clearly that Beck would continue calling the plays and that Underwood remains the designated leader of the offense as they prepare for upcoming games.

During the open week, backup quarterback Tommy Carr received a significant portion of first-team repetitions. Whittingham clarified that this rotation was part of the planned development schedule rather than an immediate move to replace the current starting quarterback.

Carr, the grandson of former Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr, has seen limited action this season. His most notable appearance came during a blowout victory over UTEP, where he successfully completed both of his pass attempts in limited time.

Underwood is currently in his second year as a collegiate starter but his first season under the guidance of Whittingham and Beck. Statistics show he has completed 59.3% of his passes while recording five touchdowns and four interceptions.

While his passing efficiency has been a point of concern, Underwood has provided value as a runner. He has contributed 212 rushing yards and two touchdowns to the Michigan ground game throughout the first five matches of the season.

Whittingham emphasized that the coaching staff is actively working to adjust the offensive scheme. The goal is to tailor the playbook to better suit the strengths of the entire roster, not just the quarterback position, for future success.

The head coach identified ball security as the primary factor preventing the team from achieving success. He noted that the Wolverines have consistently lost the turnover margin, which has directly impacted their ability to win games this year.

Addressing the media on Monday, Whittingham stated that the team's primary objective is to rectify these turnover issues. He warned that if the trend of losing the turnover battle continues, the team will struggle to secure necessary victories.

Jason Beck previously served as Whittingham’s offensive coordinator at Utah in 2025. During that tenure, he oversaw a highly productive unit that ranked second nationally in rushing and fourth in both scoring and total yards for the season.

The coaching staff is now turning its attention to the upcoming fixture. Michigan is scheduled to host Penn State this Saturday, providing an immediate opportunity to demonstrate improvements made during the break and correct recent offensive struggles.

Whittingham has previously described the challenge of leading the Michigan program as one of the most significant tasks in his four-decade career. He remains committed to the current staff and personnel as they navigate the remainder of the season.

The Wolverines will look to improve their standing within the conference as they enter the next phase of their schedule. Consistency in execution and a reduction in turnovers will be central to their game plan against Penn State.

Fans and analysts will be watching closely to see if the adjustments made during the open week translate into a more efficient offensive performance. The team is currently working to regain momentum after the loss to Minnesota.

With the quarterback and play-calling situation now settled, the focus shifts entirely to preparation. The team aims to utilize the remaining games to build cohesion and address the specific deficiencies identified in the first five weeks of play.

The upcoming game against Penn State serves as a critical test for the Michigan offense. A strong showing would provide much-needed confidence for the squad as they progress through the remainder of their competitive and challenging conference schedule.

As the team prepares for the weekend, the coaching staff continues to emphasize the importance of discipline. Whittingham maintains that the path to success lies in fixing fundamental errors and executing the game plan with greater precision and focus.
