Michael Jordan’s 1998 NBA Finals jersey sold for record $14 million

The autographed Chicago Bulls jersey worn by Michael Jordan during the 1998 NBA Finals has set a new record for basketball memorabilia.

Michael Jordan’s 1998 NBA Finals jersey sold for record $14 million

A game-worn, autographed Chicago Bulls jersey belonging to Michael Jordan has been sold for $14 million (£10.6 million) in a private sale. Hunt Auctions announced the transaction on Monday, confirming it as the highest price ever paid for a piece of basketball memorabilia.

The red road jersey was worn by Jordan during Game 2 of the 1998 NBA Finals against the Utah Jazz. On that evening, Jordan recorded a game-high 37 points, helping the Bulls secure a victory to level the series at one game apiece.

The 1997-98 season, famously documented in the 'Last Dance' series, marked the final championship run of Jordan's career. The Bulls ultimately defeated the Jazz in six games, securing the sixth NBA title of Jordan's tenure with the franchise.

The buyer of the historic jersey has been identified as Ron Firman, a real estate investor based in Miami. Hunt Auctions facilitated the private treaty sale, noting that the item has maintained a clear chain of custody since being purchased from the Bulls by a private collector in 2003.

David Hunt, president of Hunt Auctions, stated that the sale reflects the growing status of Jordan's memorabilia. He remarked that the market for such items has escalated into an elite asset class, comparable to the valuation of iconic works of art.

Expressing his satisfaction with the acquisition, Ron Firman noted his admiration for the basketball legend. "Michael Jordan was an incredibly talented player who is admired around the world," Firman said in a statement released by the auction house.

The $14 million figure represents the second-highest price ever paid for a piece of game-worn sports memorabilia. The record remains held by a jersey worn by baseball legend Babe Ruth during the 1932 World Series, which sold for $24.12 million in 2024.

This sale is the latest in a series of high-value transactions involving Jordan's 1998 Finals equipment. A jersey from Game 1 of the same series sold for approximately $10.1 million in 2022, while a Game 3 jersey fetched $12.3 million last month.

Interest in Jordan's final season with the Bulls remains exceptionally high among collectors. In 2023, a pair of Air Jordan sneakers worn by the star during Game 2 of the 1998 Finals sold for $2.2 million, setting a record for the most valuable sneakers ever sold.

Jordan's legacy as one of the greatest players in NBA history continues to drive the memorabilia market. During his six championship-winning seasons with the Bulls, he was awarded the Finals Most Valuable Player title on every occasion.

The 'Last Dance' era is widely considered the pinnacle of Jordan's career, and items associated with this period are highly sought after. The 10-episode documentary series released in 2020 further cemented the cultural significance of that final championship season.

Hunt Auctions highlighted that the jersey has only changed hands once since its original purchase from the team. This rarity and provenance contributed significantly to the record-breaking price achieved in the private sale.

The previous record for a piece of basketball memorabilia was held by a 2007-08 trading card featuring both Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. That item sold for $12.9 million last year, a benchmark now surpassed by the 1998 Finals jersey.

As a six-time NBA champion, Jordan's influence on the sport remains unparalleled. His ability to perform on the biggest stage, particularly during the 1998 Finals, is frequently cited as a defining element of his professional legacy.

The sale serves as a benchmark for the sports memorabilia industry, according to Hunt Auctions. The firm noted that 36 years of market experience confirms that items associated with Jordan and Babe Ruth stand above all others in American sports history.

The 1998 NBA Finals concluded with Jordan hitting an iconic pull-up jumper to secure the title. This moment remains one of the most celebrated highlights in the history of the Chicago Bulls and the NBA.

Collectors continue to track the availability of items from the 1998 Finals with intense interest. The high prices achieved at auction reflect the enduring appeal of Jordan's final championship run.

While the $14 million price tag is substantial, it underscores the status of Jordan's game-worn gear as premier investment assets. The market for such items shows no signs of cooling as collectors seek to preserve pieces of sporting history.

The auction house expressed pride in facilitating the sale, which they described as a historic moment for the industry. The transaction highlights the unique intersection of professional sports, history, and high-end investment.

With this latest record, Michael Jordan's memorabilia continues to dominate the top tier of the collectors' market. The 1998 'Last Dance' jersey now stands as a testament to his lasting impact on basketball and global sports culture.
