Australia begin World Cup defence with dominant victory over Samoa

Australia launched their Women's Rugby League World Cup title defence in emphatic fashion on Thursday, securing a 40-0 victory over Samoa at Commbank Stadium in Sydney. The Jillaroos dominated the Group A encounter, establishing a strong lead before managing the game in the second half.

Debutante Jocelyn Kelleher was the standout performer for the hosts, demonstrating composure with both ball in hand and from the kicking tee. The five-eighth successfully converted six of her seven attempts and played a pivotal role in creating two of the team's tries.

Coach Jess Skinner opted for a fresh look in the halves, leaving out veteran Ali Brigginshaw and excluding Jesse Southwell from the matchday 18. Kelleher’s performance justified this selection, as she orchestrated the Australian attack with precision throughout the contest.

The Jillaroos' offensive structure benefited from established combinations, particularly those involving players from the NRLW premiership-winning Roosters squad. Tarryn Aiken, Olivia Kernick, Keely Nizza, Millie Elliott, Jess Sergis, and captain Isabelle Kelly all contributed to a cohesive team display.

Despite the final scoreline, the match began with a period of pressure from the Samoan side, who were making their first World Cup appearance since 2008. Samoa earned repeat sets early on but failed to capitalise on their opportunities at the Australian line.

A crucial handling error from Samoan fullback Destiny Mino-Sinapati allowed Australia to regain control. Shortly after, Jaime Chapman opened the scoring following a well-executed spread to the left, capitalising on a precise cut-out pass from Tamika Upton.

Julia Robinson added to the tally soon after, showing individual brilliance by cutting inside from the wing to power through three defenders. Kelleher’s conversion from the sideline further highlighted the gulf in class as the Jillaroos began to find their rhythm.

Shaylee Bent crossed for the third try of the evening, benefiting from an attacking set prompted by a high bomb from Kelleher. The pressure continued to mount on the Samoan defence as the Australian side moved the ball with increasing fluidity.

Keely Nizza extended the lead with a clever dummy and fend to score through the middle of the park. Just before the interval, Kelleher broke through the defensive line herself, setting up Olivia Kernick to maintain the momentum into the break.

The second half saw a more resilient defensive effort from Samoa, who managed to restrict the Jillaroos to two additional tries. Keilee Joseph crossed early in the period following a short pass from Kernick, while Jess Sergis scored late to seal the result.

Samoa showed flashes of promise during the second half, with prop Laikha Clarke coming close to scoring before knocking the ball on. Teenage winger Freedom Crichton Ropati also impressed with a notable defensive tackle on Tiana Penitani Gray.

Captain Isabelle Kelly acknowledged the team's performance but noted that there is room for growth as the tournament progresses. She described the match as slightly scrappy in patches but expressed excitement about the squad's development in the coming weeks.

Kelleher reflected positively on her international debut, describing the experience as amazing. She highlighted the strong camaraderie within the camp and the effectiveness of the team's training preparations leading up to the tournament opener.

The Samoan side featured several players with Australian experience, including Taliah Fuimaono and Evania Isa’ako, who previously represented the Jillaroos. Despite their familiarity with the opposition, they struggled to contain the clinical nature of the Australian attack.

The match was part of a double-header event at Commbank Stadium, which also featured the men's Samoa team securing a 78-4 victory over France. However, the overall attendance was lower than anticipated, leaving many seats empty in the venue.

Australia will now turn their attention to their next group stage fixture, which is scheduled to take place against England in Perth next week. The Jillaroos will look to build on this opening success as they aim to retain their world title.

The Women's Rugby League World Cup continues to be a focal point for the sport, with teams from across the globe competing for the trophy. Australia enter the tournament as heavy favourites given their recent form and depth of talent.

The Jillaroos' ability to rotate their squad and integrate new players like Kelleher successfully suggests they remain the team to beat. Their defensive shutout against Samoa serves as a warning to other nations competing in the tournament.

As the competition moves into the next round of fixtures, the focus will shift to how teams adjust to the intensity of international rugby league. Australia’s performance in Sydney has set a high standard for the remainder of the group stage.

The tournament organisers will be hoping for increased engagement and larger crowds as the competition progresses. For now, the Jillaroos remain focused on their path to the final, maintaining their momentum following this comprehensive opening victory.
