Tilak Varma targets series whitewash against New Zealand

India middle-order batter Tilak Varma has outlined the team's ambition to complete a 5-0 series sweep in the remaining T20I matches against New Zealand.

Tilak Varma targets series whitewash against New Zealand

India middle-order batter Tilak Varma has confirmed that the squad is fully focused on securing a clean sweep in their ongoing five-match T20I series against New Zealand. Having already clinched the series with three consecutive victories, the tourists are now aiming to maintain their momentum.

The Indian side currently leads the series 3-0 following successful chases in Christchurch and Wellington. With the fourth T20I scheduled for Auckland on 30 October and the final match in Hamilton on 1 November, the team is determined to remain professional.

Speaking ahead of the fourth encounter, Varma highlighted the collective mindset within the dressing room. He stated that the team views the upcoming matches as a significant opportunity to achieve a 5-0 result for the travelling Indian supporters.

Varma also credited the influence of Head Coach Gautam Gambhir in shaping the team's culture. He noted that the coaching staff has emphasised the importance of maintaining high standards, which are expected to provide momentum for the upcoming ODI and Test fixtures.

The left-hander discussed his tactical evolution as he transitions into a finisher role at number five or six. He explained that his approach now balances power hitting with the patience required to take matches deep into the final overs.

Reflecting on his mindset during critical phases of a game, Varma noted that he focuses on the psychological pressure placed on the bowler. He believes that by staying calm and rotating the strike, he can force the opposition into making errors.

Varma recalled a recent partnership with Nitish Kumar Reddy, where the pair focused on clear communication to navigate a tense run-chase. He emphasised that such collaborative efforts have been instrumental in the team's success throughout the tour so far.

The batter also spoke about his growing role in supporting captain Shreyas Iyer on the field. He explained that they share leadership responsibilities to ensure that every tactical detail is covered during the heat of the contest.

The series began on 22 October in Christchurch, where India secured a four-wicket victory. This was followed by another four-wicket win at the same venue on 24 October, establishing early dominance in the series.

The third T20I, held in Wellington on 27 October, saw India claim a six-wicket win. This result officially sealed the series victory for the visitors, leaving only the final two matches to be contested.

India's performance in this series has been marked by consistent batting displays and effective management of pressure situations. The ability to chase down targets has been a standout feature of their tactical approach under the current leadership.

As the team prepares for the fourth match in Auckland, the focus remains on consistency. Varma reiterated that complacency is not an option, as the players are conscious of the standards they must set for younger cricketers.

The transition of Varma from a top-order batter to a finisher has been a key tactical shift for the Indian side. His ability to adapt his game to different match situations has provided the team with greater flexibility in the middle order.

The upcoming matches will serve as a final test for the squad before they shift their attention to the longer formats of the game. The momentum generated in this T20I series is expected to be vital for the remainder of the tour.

The Indian team will look to continue their winning streak when they take the field in Auckland tomorrow. A victory there would put them in a strong position to complete their goal of a series whitewash.
