This ranking marks the first time head coach Todd Golden’s squad has occupied the top position since the conclusion of the 2025 season. That year, the team secured the school's third national championship by defeating Houston in the final.

Reflecting on the preseason recognition, coach Golden expressed his desire for the program to maintain a consistent championship expectation. He noted that the team aims to approach every season with the mindset of a title contender.

Duke University secured the second position in the poll, earning 10 first-place votes. Illinois followed in third place, receiving the remaining two first-place votes. UConn and Arizona completed the top five, both coming off successful Final Four appearances.

The Gators enter the upcoming campaign with a roster that features significant experience. Key players such as Thomas Haugh, Alex Condon, Rueben Chinyelu, and Denzel Aberdeen remain with the team, providing continuity from their previous championship-winning season.

Denzel Aberdeen has returned to the program following a year at Kentucky. His return, facilitated by recent court rulings regarding player eligibility, adds depth to a squad that is looking to improve upon last season's performance.

Last season, Florida experienced a challenging start but eventually secured the Southeastern Conference regular-season championship. However, their campaign ended prematurely with a second-round loss to Iowa in the NCAA tournament as a number one seed.

Coach Golden emphasized that the team is better prepared for the pressures of the new season. He stated that the players are utilizing the lessons learned from last year's early-season struggles and the disappointment of the tournament exit.

Forward Alex Condon highlighted the team's motivation during their early morning conditioning sessions. He noted that the group remains focused on the fact that they fell short of their ultimate goals during the previous tournament run.

Duke’s second-place ranking is their highest preseason placement since 2017. Head coach Jon Scheyer leads a talented roster that includes Dame Sarr, Caleb Foster, Patrick Ngongba II, and Cayden Boozer, following a period of consistent success for the program.

Despite winning 70 games over the past two seasons—a school record—Duke has faced recent setbacks in the postseason. Losses to UConn in the Elite Eight and Houston in the Final Four have provided additional motivation for the Blue Devils.

Illinois matched its best preseason ranking since 2001. The team returns five of its top eight scorers from last year, including Andrej Stojakovic and David Mirkovic, following a season that saw the program reach its first Final Four in two decades.

The remainder of the top ten includes Michigan State, Texas, Tennessee, Virginia, and Houston. The second ten features Louisville, Arkansas, St. John's, Miami, and Gonzaga, followed by Michigan, Kansas, Iowa State, Texas Tech, and Alabama.

The final five teams in the preseason Top 25 are USC, UCLA, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and BYU. Notably, Vanderbilt makes its first preseason appearance in the rankings since 2015, while BYU returns despite the departure of star player AJ Dybantsa.

Kansas enters the season with high expectations, bolstered by the addition of top recruit Tyran Stokes. The Jayhawks also added forward Trey Kaufman-Renn from Purdue, alongside the return of Tre White and Melvin Council Jr. following eligibility rulings.

Kentucky, which currently sits at 23rd in the poll, is nearing a historic milestone. The program is making its 998th appearance in the AP poll and is expected to become the first team to reach 1,000 appearances within the next two weeks.

Missouri narrowly missed the Top 25 but remains a team to watch. The Tigers have bolstered their roster with veteran talent, high-profile transfers, and a strong class of freshmen, following a court injunction that allowed forward Mark Mitchell Jr. to play.

Purdue, which received votes but did not make the final list, saw its streak of 79 consecutive weeks in the poll come to an end. Houston currently holds the longest active streak in the rankings, having appeared for 127 consecutive weeks.

The college basketball season is set to begin in November, with teams across the country navigating a complex landscape of roster changes and eligibility disputes. Coaches and players are now shifting their focus to the opening games of the schedule.

As the season approaches, the focus for the top-ranked Gators will be on maintaining their form and building upon their established core. The team’s ability to integrate experienced players with new talent will be central to their championship ambitions.
