Speaking at a press conference held at the Giuseppe Sinigaglia stadium, Carrick conceded that his side has struggled to prevent goals this season. United have managed only one clean sheet in their opening 10 matches, a statistic that has hindered their progress.

The defensive difficulties have persisted despite changes in personnel and tactical adjustments. Carrick noted that there are specific areas within their current game model that require immediate improvement to provide the team with a more solid foundation.

The issue extends beyond the current campaign, with the club having struggled to maintain defensive consistency over a prolonged period. Under Carrick’s predecessor, Ruben Amorim, the team recorded nine clean sheets across 63 matches, highlighting a long-standing concern.

Achieving stability has been hampered by a lack of continuity in selection. Carrick has only been able to field the same back four once this season, during a victory against Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on 30 August.

The defensive resources available to the manager have been further depleted by recent injury setbacks. Lisandro Martinez is unavailable for the trip to Italy after sustaining a thigh injury during the recent draw against Leeds United.

Adding to the manager's selection dilemmas, Leny Yoro is currently ruled out due to suspension. Furthermore, Luke Shaw remains sidelined, with Carrick suggesting the left-back is unlikely to return to action until after the November international break.

Matthijs de Ligt has returned to the squad and is considered fit to play after an 11-month absence following back surgery. However, Carrick opted to deploy Noussair Mazraoui in a central defensive role during the recent domestic fixture.

The absence of a natural left-back has been a recurring theme, with five different players starting in that position across the team's six most recent matches. This has led to scrutiny regarding the club's transfer activity during the summer window.

Reports indicate that Manchester United explored options to bolster their defensive ranks, including discussions regarding Algeria international Rayan Ait-Nouri on deadline day. However, no additional cover for Shaw was secured before the window closed.

Young defender Harry Amass has been identified as a potential option to provide depth in the coming weeks. Carrick defended the teenager's development, insisting that the player remains in contention for a first-team opportunity.

Regarding the integration of younger players, the manager stated, "At some point, young players need an opportunity. It's just finding the right time." He emphasized that multiple academy prospects are currently working to break into the senior setup.

The club's recruitment strategy has also faced criticism, particularly regarding the allocation of funds. Some observers have questioned the decision to invest £50 million in midfielder Andrey Santos rather than prioritizing defensive reinforcements.

Carrick defended the club's transfer business, noting that the management team had to operate within specific constraints during the summer. He highlighted the importance of Santos to the current squad and expressed satisfaction with his arrival.

"We had to make decisions in the summer. We did what we could do and made the best of it," Carrick remarked. He maintained that the focus must remain on improving the performance of the players currently available.

The Champions League fixture against Como represents a crucial opportunity for United to regain momentum. A more disciplined defensive display is expected to be the primary objective for the travelling squad in Italy.

As the team looks to move up the standings, the pressure remains on Carrick to find a winning formula. The manager is fully aware that defensive errors have been costly in the opening stages of the season.

The contrast with other top-tier sides is notable, with teams like Arsenal recording seven clean sheets in 11 matches. This benchmark serves as a reminder of the level of defensive rigour required to compete at the highest level.

With a busy schedule ahead, the return of key personnel will be vital for United's prospects. The coaching staff continues to monitor the fitness of the squad closely to ensure they can navigate the upcoming fixtures.

Manchester United will now focus on their tactical preparations for the encounter at the Giuseppe Sinigaglia. A positive result in the Champions League would provide a much-needed boost for the club's European campaign.

Despite Liverpool trailing by two goals for much of the first half, Ngumoha’s influence grew as the match progressed. He became the youngest Liverpool player to record a goal contribution in the Champions League, cementing his status as a rising star.

The visitors initially dominated, leaving Liverpool struggling for rhythm. However, Ngumoha took responsibility on the right flank, consistently challenging the Villarreal defence with his pace and dribbling ability throughout the encounter, providing the spark needed to ignite the home side.

Alexis Mac Allister initiated the Liverpool recovery with a goal, before Ngumoha provided the spark for the equaliser. The youngster delivered a precise cross that found Ronald Araujo, who headed home to level the scores in a high-intensity clash.

Following the interval, Ngumoha continued to torment the Villarreal backline. He successfully bypassed Sergi Cardona before setting up Mac Allister for his second goal of the night, which handed Liverpool the lead for the first time in the contest.

Florian Wirtz added a fourth goal for the home side, which proved essential in securing the win. Although Ngumoha did not find the net himself, his contribution was instrumental in the seven-goal thriller that kept the Anfield crowd engaged.

The teenager was substituted in the 74th minute to a standing ovation from the Anfield crowd, with Bradley Barcola replacing him. His performance earned him the official Uefa player of the match award, a recognition he celebrated with goalkeeper Alisson.

Reflecting on his performance, Ngumoha told Amazon Prime that he enjoyed the challenge of the match. He noted that he believes in his ability to win one-on-one situations and aims to remain ruthless in his play whenever he gets opportunities.

Former Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge praised the youngster’s natural talent during his analysis. He described Ngumoha’s technical ability as God-given and highlighted the player's dedication to improving his game on the training pitch, noting his desire to be truly decisive.

Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola also commended the winger’s development. While acknowledging the teenager's impressive form, Iraola emphasised that Ngumoha is still in the early stages of his career and will face natural fluctuations in performance as he matures.

Iraola noted that the club is pleased with the player's attitude and his willingness to adapt to different roles. The coach highlighted that Ngumoha is becoming increasingly comfortable playing on the right wing, despite his previous experience on the left.

Ngumoha, who traditionally played on the left, has been working to improve his versatility. He credited his recent international experience with England and regular training for his growing comfort on the opposite flank, calling it another tool in his toolbox.

The match statistics highlighted the winger's impact, as he completed seven of his eight attempted dribbles. He also registered 12 touches within the opposition penalty area, proving to be a constant threat to the Villarreal defensive structure throughout.

Contractual discussions regarding the player's future are reportedly ongoing. Ngumoha is currently tied to a deal signed in September 2025, but expectations suggest a new agreement may be reached soon given his rapid rise within the senior squad setup.

The player stated that he is leaving the negotiations to his agent, preferring to focus on his performances on the pitch. His recent form has solidified his position within the squad under Iraola, who continues to manage his playing minutes.

Liverpool’s victory adds to a positive run of form for the club. The team has been balancing domestic commitments with their European campaign, with Ngumoha becoming an increasingly vital component of the squad as they navigate a busy fixture list.

The win over Villarreal serves as a significant milestone for Ngumoha, who first gained attention with a late winner against Newcastle over a year ago. His progression since that debut has been rapid, moving from prospect to key contributor.

As Liverpool look ahead to their next fixtures, the emergence of Ngumoha provides a boost to their attacking options. The coaching staff remains committed to managing his development carefully, ensuring he remains grounded while continuing to improve his endurance levels.

The atmosphere at Anfield reflected the fans' appreciation for the teenager's efforts. His ability to perform under pressure in a high-stakes Champions League fixture has earned him widespread recognition from supporters, teammates, and pundits alike after a memorable night.

Liverpool will now look to build on this result as they continue their European campaign. With key players like Ngumoha finding their rhythm, the team aims to maintain their momentum in upcoming matches across all competitions this season.
