Both the Indian men's and women's kabaddi teams secured resounding victories in their opening matches in Ahmedabad.

India made a powerful statement on the opening day of the Commonwealth Kabaddi Championships 2026, securing dominant victories in both the men's and women's categories. The tournament, which commenced on Friday at the Veer Savarkar Stadium in Ahmedabad, saw impressive performances from the host nation's athletes.

The Indian women's national kabaddi team set the tone for the day with a crushing 73-13 victory over Malaysia. From the very beginning of the contest, the home side demonstrated absolute superiority on the mat, racing out to a commanding 20-3 lead in the early exchanges.

Maintaining relentless pressure throughout the first half, the Indian women extended their advantage comfortably to 30-11 by the time the half-time whistle blew. Captain Nidhi Sharma marshalled her troops expertly, contributing eight crucial raid points to anchor the team's offensive efforts.

The statistical dominance of the Indian women was evident across every facet of the game, as they accumulated an impressive 40 raid points and 20 tackle points. In stark contrast, the Malaysian side managed only nine raid points and two tackle points over the course of the match.

A key feature of the opening match was India's defensive discipline, which allowed them to inflict six All-Outs on their opponents without conceding a single one themselves. Captain Darsini tried to rally the Malaysian side, finishing as her team's leading scorer with three raid points.

Individual standout performances propelled the scoreline higher, with Sakshi leading the entire scoring chart with 13 comprehensive points. Her tally included eight raid points and an exceptional defensive contribution of five tackle points.

Renuka provided a major spark off the bench, delivering an eye-catching performance that yielded nine raid points from nine raid attempts. Additional scoring support came from Anu, who contributed six points, alongside solid defensive work from Karthika Ramesh and Jyoti.

After the interval, the Indian women completely shifted gears and overwhelmed Malaysia by winning the second half 43-2. Renuka continued her fine form by adding another seven points from six raids, compounding the pressure on the opposition.

The final quarter of the match turned into a procession as India completely shut out the opposition to record a 20-0 scoreline in that phase alone. This emphatic performance established the team as clear contenders for the championship title.

Following the women's success, the Indian men's kabaddi team took to the mat to face a resilient England side in their opening fixture. Captain Surjeet Singh led his squad with tactical precision, guiding them to a comfortable 46-26 victory.

The Indian men asserted control over the contest by winning the raid battle 32-23 against the English defenders. Furthermore, their defensive unit outperformed England by winning the tackle battle 8-3 to stifle any potential momentum.

Demonstrating similar defensive organisation to their female counterparts, the Indian men inflicted three All-Outs on England while maintaining a clean sheet in that department. Naveen Kumar spearheaded the raiding department, finishing as India's leading scorer in the men's match with 12 points.

Naveen's match tally consisted of 11 raid points and a valuable tackle point, showcasing his all-round utility on the mat. Neeraj Narwal provided excellent support in the raiding department, chipping in with 11 raid points of his own.

Additional scoring contributions for the men's team came from Pankaj Mohite with four points and Sachin with three points. In the defensive sector, Nitesh and Deepak S contributed three and two tackle points respectively to secure the win.

India also excelled in securing touch points, registering 24 successful touches compared to England's total of nine. This clinical efficiency in attack proved to be the decisive factor in the second half of the fixture.

The Veer Savarkar Stadium provided a vibrant atmosphere for the opening day of competition, drawing enthusiastic crowds to witness international kabaddi. Both Indian squads will look to carry this winning momentum into their upcoming fixtures in the tournament.

The Commonwealth Kabaddi Championships bring together top national teams to compete in the traditional South Asian sport. India's strong start underscores the nation's historical dominance and depth of talent in the discipline.

As the tournament progresses, teams will face a demanding schedule of matches to determine the eventual medal winners. The coaching staff of both Indian teams will be pleased with the tactical execution and physical conditioning displayed in these opening encounters.

With opening day now concluded, both squads have established a strong baseline of performance in Ahmedabad. Analysts and supporters will monitor the progression of these teams as international competition intensifies over the coming days at the venue.

The comprehensive nature of these opening victories highlights the rigorous preparation undertaken by the Indian contingent. Both men and women will aim to maintain this high standard of play as the championship advances through its preliminary stages.

Seventeen-year-old Tanvi Sharma comfortably beats compatriot Isharani Baruah in straight games to reach the second round in Paris.

Seventeen-year-old Indian shuttler Tanvi Sharma delivered a commanding performance on Tuesday at the French Open 2026, defeating her compatriot Isharani Baruah in straight games. The opening-round encounter took place on Court 4 at the Arena Grand in Paris, drawing attention from badminton fans worldwide. Both competitors entered the court aiming to make a strong impression at the prestigious World Tour event.

The match concluded with a scoreline of 21-12, 21-12 in favour of the younger Indian competitor. Despite the final score reflecting a comfortable victory, both athletes displayed competitive intensity during the early exchanges of the contest. The encounter lasted a total of 32 minutes as the two players battled for a coveted spot in the next round.

Tanvi immediately established dominance from the outset of the opening game by claiming three consecutive points. She maintained this momentum to secure a commanding 11-3 advantage by the mid-game interval. Within just 14 minutes of play, the teenager successfully closed out the first game to take the lead.

The second game initially proved more challenging as Isharani adjusted her tactics to counter her opponent. The 22-year-old kept pace closely with Tanvi during the opening exchanges, maintaining a level scoreline at 5-5. However, the resilient teenager soon found her rhythm and pulled ahead significantly.

Demonstrating superior court coverage and shot selection, Tanvi carved out an 11-6 lead at the second game interval. She continued to apply pressure through precise placement, eventually closing out the match in straight games. The comprehensive win secured her safe passage into the second round of the French capital tournament.

Following this impressive victory, Tanvi stares at a possible Round of 16 clash against top-ranked opposition. World No. 1 An Se-young is scheduled to face Denmark’s Amalie Schulz in her opening fixture of the competition. The potential meeting with the Korean star represents a significant test for the rising Indian talent.

Tanvi is no stranger to facing elite competition on the international circuit, having previously encountered An Se-young. The Indian youngster previously troubled the Korean star during their quarterfinal encounter at the recent Denmark Open. Although she ultimately succumbed to a 15-21, 13-21 defeat in Denmark, those valuable experiences continue to shape her development.

The French Open remains a vital fixture on the international badminton calendar, attracting elite players from across the globe. Competitors gather in Paris to secure ranking points and prestigious titles during the demanding World Tour season. Matches contested at the Arena Grand often showcase the highest standards of technical ability and physical endurance.

For Tanvi, this tournament provides another opportunity to test her abilities against seasoned professionals and top-tier specialists. Her steady progression through the junior and senior ranks highlights the growing depth of talent within Indian badminton. Observers tracking the sport have noted her rapid ascent and consistent performances in international arenas.

Isharani Baruah, despite the opening-round exit, remains a notable competitor within the national circuit. The 22-year-old continues to gain valuable experience by competing in major World Tour events across Europe and Asia. Such matches contribute significantly to the athletes' overall rankings and tactical maturity.

Coaching staff and national selectors closely monitor these encounters to evaluate the readiness of emerging players for major team events. The competitive rivalry between compatriots often fosters higher standards of domestic excellence. Both athletes will look to build upon their current form as the international badminton season progresses further.

As the tournament in Paris advances into its latter stages, attention will inevitably shift towards the heavyweight contenders. The Round of 16 matches promise high-intensity showdowns as the surviving players vie for quarterfinal berths. Tanvi Sharma’s potential progression will be followed closely by supporters eager to witness her continued growth on the global stage.

The all-Indian opening round fixture provided fans with a compelling spectacle on Court 4 at the Arena Grand. Followers of the sport tuned into live streams and updates throughout the afternoon to track the progress of the match. Such domestic clashes underline the increasing depth of badminton talent emerging from the South Asian nation.

The encounter began promptly at 1:40 pm IST, corresponding to a morning start of 10:10 am local time in Paris. Enthusiasts unable to attend the venue in person followed the action via live broadcast platforms. The BWF TV YouTube channel provided official coverage, ensuring global audiences could watch the unfolding drama.

Reflecting on her earlier tournament appearance in Denmark, Tanvi demonstrated that she can challenge the absolute best players in the sport. Her aggressive style and tactical adaptability caused noticeable discomfort for the top-seeded Korean during their previous meeting. Building upon those lessons will be crucial as she prepares for her upcoming matches in the French capital.

The physical demands of competing at the highest level require athletes to maintain peak conditioning throughout a grueling calendar. Matches decided in straight games, such as this 32-minute affair, offer vital energy conservation opportunities for the victors. Such efficiency becomes increasingly important as the tournament progresses toward the medal rounds.

With the first hurdle successfully cleared, the focus immediately shifts to recovery and strategic preparation for the next challenge. Coaching teams analyse opponent tendencies meticulously to formulate winning game plans ahead of each crucial fixture. Tanvi’s training regime in recent months has clearly yielded positive results on the court.

As the badminton community absorbs the early results from Paris, anticipation mounts for the subsequent rounds of competition. Top seeds entering the fray will test the credentials of every surviving contender in the draw. The coming days will reveal whether the young Indian prospect can cause an upset against the world's finest.

National pride and personal ambition continue to drive these athletes forward in their respective professional careers. Success in premier European tournaments elevates players in the global rankings and enhances their reputation internationally. The journey for Tanvi Sharma in Paris is only just beginning as she eyes further milestones.

Concluding the opening day with a decisive victory sets a positive tone for the contingent representing India at the French Open. Every match won adds valuable ranking points necessary for qualification toward year-end championships and major global events. Fans will eagerly await the next chapter of Tanvi’s campaign at the Arena Grand.

Fans can attend matches at Jalandhar and Mohali without charge by obtaining digital passes online for the continental tournament.

Hockey India has officially confirmed that spectators will enjoy free entry to all matches during the upcoming men’s Asian Champions Trophy 2026. The continental tournament is scheduled to take place across two major venues in the state of Punjab, bringing top-tier international action directly to passionate local supporters without any financial barrier.

The decision aims to encourage maximum local attendance and fill the stands with passionate supporters for the international showcase. Organisers hope the initiative will provide a significant boost to the atmosphere during the high-stakes matches, celebrating the deep-rooted passion for the sport in the region.

Two prominent venues have been selected to host the 20 matches of the tournament schedule. The Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar and the Olympian Balbir Singh Senior International Hockey Stadium in Mohali will share hosting duties for the prestigious multi-nation competition.

All preliminary league-stage fixtures will be conducted at the Jalandhar facility from October 27 through to November 2. Following the round-robin phase, the competition will shift to Mohali for the crucial knockout rounds and the tournament's climax.

The decisive semifinal encounters and the subsequent medal matches are slated to be played in Mohali on November 4 and November 5. Fans attending these latter stages will also benefit from the complimentary access policy established by the national federation.

Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey explained the reasoning behind the spectator initiative. He noted that the governing body wants to ensure local fans can witness elite international competition firsthand without facing any financial hurdles or ticket pricing constraints.

Dilip Tirkey stated in an official release: "By making entry free for the Hero Asian Champions Trophy Punjab 2026, we hope to bring more supporters to the stands and give them an opportunity to experience the excitement of top-level international hockey."

To manage stadium capacities and ensure smooth entry, a digital ticketing system has been implemented despite the matches being entirely free of cost. Supporters are required to secure their entry passes in advance through designated online platforms to guarantee admission.

Interested attendees can acquire their passes by visiting the official ticketing partner website or by downloading the designated mobile application. The registration process allows individuals to select their preferred matches from the comprehensive tournament fixture list.

Once registered, supporters will receive a digital entry pass complete with a unique QR code. This code serves as the official ticket and must be scanned at the stadium gates upon arrival for seamless admittance and efficient crowd management by venue staff.

The tournament schedule features several high-profile encounters involving the host nation during the opening week of competition. India will commence its tournament campaign on October 27 with a league fixture against neighbouring Asian rivals Bangladesh.

Following the opening match, the home side will face challenging tests against formidable continental opponents in quick succession. The subsequent round-robin fixtures include demanding matches against China on October 29 and Japan on October 30.

The closing stages of the preliminary group matches will see India take on Malaysia on November 1. The final league fixture for the hosts will be contested against South Korea on November 2 before the tournament moves to its knockout phase.

The Asian Champions Trophy remains one of the premier events on the regional calendar, bringing together the top hockey nations in Asia. Past editions of the tournament have consistently delivered fierce competition and memorable encounters among the participating teams.

Hosting the tournament in Punjab marks a significant return of major international hockey to a region with a rich heritage in the sport. Both Jalandhar and Mohali boast proud traditions of producing elite players who have represented the national team with distinction over the decades.

The infrastructure at both the Surjit Singh Stadium and the Balbir Singh Senior Stadium has been prepared to meet international standards for the multi-nation event. Officials anticipate strong crowds throughout the preliminary phase as local fans seize the opportunity to watch the national team in action.

The ticketing platform went live concurrently with the announcement by Hockey India, allowing early planners to secure their digital passes. Organisers have urged fans to register promptly to guarantee access, particularly for high-demand fixtures involving the host nation.

As preparations enter the final week before the opening ceremony, teams are finalising their training camps and tactical approaches. The continental tournament will serve as an important benchmark for national sides ahead of upcoming international commitments in the global hockey calendar.

The hosting of this elite tournament highlights India's ongoing commitment to promoting field hockey and engaging with grassroots supporters. By removing the cost of entry, Hockey India expects a surge in stadium attendance, creating an unforgettable atmosphere for players and fans alike across all twenty matches.

Fans are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the digital pass retrieval process early to avoid any last-minute complications. With world-class talent descending upon Punjab, the tournament promises a thrilling showcase of skill, speed, and sportsmanship.

The successful staging of the Asian Champions Trophy in Jalandhar and Mohali will further cement the region's status as a heartbeat for Indian hockey. Authorities are working closely with local law enforcement and volunteers to ensure smooth logistics for the thousands of expected spectators.

Smriti Mandhana takes up a UNICEF role as Gaganjeet Bhullar triumphs in Hyderabad and national racing concludes in Chennai.

Newly appointed India women’s cricket captain Smriti Mandhana has been officially named a celebrity advocate by UNICEF India on Sunday. The prestigious announcement coincides with the global observance of the International Day of the Girl. The organisation seeks to leverage her immense influence to promote equal opportunities, health and well-being for adolescent girls across the country.

The annual International Day of the Girl draws widespread attention to critical issues concerning girls’ rights, safety, leadership potential, and the persistent barriers that continue to restrict their choices in society. In her new capacity, Mandhana will actively support ongoing initiatives aimed at empowering young females and improving their access to learning and play.

An Arjuna Award recipient, Mandhana stepped into her leadership role earlier in the week after Harmanpreet Kaur stepped down from the captaincy of the Indian women’s cricket team. Her appointment as a UNICEF advocate highlights her growing stature as a role model both on and off the sports field.

Expressing her deep gratitude upon accepting the position, Mandhana noted that growing up playing competitive cricket taught her that every great dream fundamentally begins with a single opportunity. She added that with hard work, determination, and proper encouragement, opportunities can transform into something truly extraordinary for young people.

Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, who maintains a long-standing association with UNICEF as its Regional Ambassador for South Asia, warmly welcomed the development. Tendulkar posted a message on social media to congratulate Mandhana, noting that she inspires millions on the field and will be a brilliant voice for children’s rights off it.

Suryansh Shedge and Vipraj Nigam starred as India A defeated Australia A by 49 runs in Puducherry.

India A avoided a clean sweep in the white-ball leg of their series against Australia A by securing a 49-run victory in the third unofficial ODI at the CAP Siechem Stadium on Sunday.

The home side posted a competitive total of 275 before bowling out the touring team, ensuring they finished the series on a positive note after facing difficulties in earlier encounters.

Suryansh Shedge played a pivotal role in the innings, coming to the crease after entering the squad as a replacement for the injured Hardik Pandya.

The Mumbai all-rounder recorded only his second List-A half-century, anchoring the innings with a resilient knock under considerable pressure from the opposition bowling attack.

Shedge accumulated 66 runs from 60 deliveries, striking seven boundaries and two maximums to steer his side away from a precarious position in the middle overs.

India A had initially made a brisk start to their innings after winning the toss and opting to bat first on a surface that offered varying bounce.

The opening pair of Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh capitalized on the fielding restrictions during the opening PowerPlay by attacking the fuller-length deliveries.

The duo added 82 runs in the first ten overs, putting the Australian bowling unit under immediate pressure and maintaining a healthy scoring rate.

However, the momentum shifted abruptly when Prabhsimran mistimed a pull shot to midwicket, triggering a significant collapse in the batting order.

Four wickets fell in quick succession as the hosts stumbled from a comfortable position to 118 for five, struggling to cope with the lack of pace on the pitch.

Priyansh departed just one run short of what would have been a well-deserved half-century, leaving the middle order exposed to disciplined bowling.

Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad joined Shedge at the crease, with the pair forced to adopt a cautious approach to stabilize the innings and rebuild the total.

The two batters compiled a crucial partnership of 42 runs before Gaikwad fell after a delivery held up in the surface, causing an edge onto his stumps.

With the score still troubling, Shedge found an able partner in Vipraj Nigam as the lower-middle order staged a remarkable recovery for the home side.

The pair launched a calculated counter-attack, targeting the visiting spin bowlers through effective use of the slog sweep and the reverse sweep strokes.

Nigam contributed a valuable 40 runs before eventually holing out in the deep, but not before recording the highest partnership of the series for India A.

The seventh-wicket stand yielded 85 runs from just 77 deliveries, effectively shifting the psychological advantage back to the batting side.

Shedge continued to farm the strike and push the scoring rate until he was eventually dismissed, helping propel the team total to 275 before the final wicket fell.

Defending a target of 275, the India A bowling attack faced a similarly aggressive approach from the touring team during the initial phase of the chase.

Josh Philippe, promoted to open the batting, took the attack to pace bowler Gurjapneet Singh alongside Liam Scott to maintain a steady scoring rate.

Philippe compiled 56 runs from 48 balls, featuring six fours and two sixes, before the introduction of spin brought about a breakthrough for the fielding side.

The Indian spinners utilized the available turn on the pitch to remove the set top-order batters and slow down the frantic accumulation of runs.

Nathan McSweeney attempted to anchor the innings through subsequent partnerships with Lachlan Shaw and Nikhil Chaudhary, keeping the scoreboard ticking over.

The required run rate steadily climbed as the hosts maintained discipline in the field, increasing the pressure on the visiting batting lineup.

The breakthrough arrived when McSweeney edged a back-of-a-length delivery from Gurjapneet through to the wicketkeeper, ending his resistance at the crease.

Faced with an escalating required run rate, the visiting lower order was forced into aggressive strokes, leading to a flurry of late wickets.

The India A pace bowlers capitalized on the desperation, claiming the final seven wickets for the addition of just 49 runs to seal the victory.

The comprehensive margin of 49 runs ensured that Ruturaj Gaikwad and his team avoided a series whitewash, concluding the white-ball fixtures on home soil.

The CAP Siechem Stadium in Puducherry provided the venue for this final encounter, which saw notable contributions from several fringe players staking claims.

Shedge emerged as a standout performer across the series, having previously impressed with the ball earlier in the tour before delivering with the bat.

The success in the final fixture highlights the depth available within the India A setup, particularly in recovering from difficult match situations.

Attention will now turn to the subsequent fixtures and domestic commitments for the players involved as the season progresses across various formats.
