The International Cricket Council marks its entry-level programme reaching one million participants worldwide with a global celebration on November 1.

The International Cricket Council has announced the launch of criiio Day, an annual global celebration of grassroots cricket taking place on November 1 to mark the entry-level programme reaching one million players worldwide. Designed to introduce the sport to new audiences through a free curriculum available in 18 languages, criiio operates on the core principle that cricket can be played anytime, anywhere, and by anyone. Since its inception in 2021, the initiative has expanded rapidly, uniting the international cricket community and helping to drive the sport's global growth across multiple continents.

The milestone one millionth player to join the initiative is thirteen-year-old Saidat Hamzat from Lagos State, Nigeria, who was introduced to the sport through a local criiio Festival at her school. Reflecting on her journey, Saidat said that cricket has given her purpose, discipline, and joy while changing her life for the better. Her mother also noted the positive transformation, expressing hope that her daughter might one day represent the Nigeria national cricket team on the international stage as the programme continues to unearth new talent.

Marking Saidat's milestone entry, the inaugural criiio Day provides ICC members worldwide with the opportunity to share inspiring stories and encourage the next generation to pick up a bat and ball. ICC Chief Executive Sanjog Gupta praised the impact of the initiative over its five-year existence. Gupta said that the programme demonstrates the power of play to unite communities and change lives while keeping fun and discovery at its core, noting that universal access remains vital as the sport prepares for its return to the Olympic Games at LA28.

To ensure global accessibility, the ICC has collaborated with its Official Global Logistics Partner, DP World, which played a key role in distributing approximately 5,000 cricket sets through the programme. The initiative has achieved a remarkable fifty-fifty gender split among its one million participants, supported by certified trainers across all twelve ICC Full Members and active delivery by sixty-five Associate Members worldwide. Regional adaptations have proven immensely successful, with Tanzania transforming the curriculum into the Swahili-language Chanzo Cricket programme, which has led the Tanzanian government to make cricket a priority sport across all 3,542 secondary schools.

The grassroots movement has also taken root in diverse environments across the globe, with sessions held on padel courts beneath the Tokyo Skytree in Japan, across the vast steppes of Mongolia, and through migrant children's programs in Chile. Africa leads all continents with over 400,000 criiio players, while Brazil stands out as a leading single nation with nearly 200,000 participants, and Bhutan has surpassed the milestone of 100,000 players. Early success stories are already emerging, with Argentina's Luna Olivera and Nigeria's Chisom Mary Okpe progressing from community sessions to national youth selection. Olivera discovered the sport through the Cricket Sin Fronteras programme before earning a spot in Argentina's under-nineteen team in 2026, while Okpe advanced rapidly to national contention following a school session in 2025.

The specific date of November first was chosen for criiio Day as a direct nod to the three letter i characters in the program's branding, which symbolize the stumps and bails making up a cricket wicket. The inaugural celebration is being driven by a global digital campaign, with cricket federations and members encouraged to share their community stories across social media channels. As the sport looks ahead to future international competitions and Olympic integration, the ICC aims to leverage the expanded delivery of grassroots programs to introduce millions more children to the game in the coming years.

Rising talent Sekayi Charasika and veteran Pat Harris discuss preparations, challenges and ambitions for LA28.

Preparations for the upcoming Olympic hockey tournaments are already underway as the United States national teams look ahead to the Los Angeles Games in less than two years time, with athletes embracing the unique opportunity of competing at home.

The International Hockey Federation recently caught up with members of the American squads during the FIH Hockey Nations Cup earlier this year to discuss their aspirations, training methods, and the significance of a home Olympics.

Rising star Sekayi Charasika and seasoned player Pat Harris shared their personal perspectives on the long road to the 2028 Olympic Games, highlighting both the excitement and the immense dedication required to reach the pinnacle of the sport.

Reflecting on the prospect of competing at LA28, twenty-year-old Charasika described the milestone as a dream come true, acknowledging the historical challenges of growing up playing field hockey within the United States.

Charasika expressed a strong desire to represent the nation effectively and to make everyone who has supported his athletic journey truly proud of his achievements on the global stage when the Olympic competition finally arrives in California.

For forty-one-year-old veteran Pat Harris, the prospect of an Olympic tournament in Los Angeles carries a deeply personal resonance, given his upbringing in the nearby small town of Moorpark, located just forty-five minutes outside the host city.

Harris noted that his immediate thoughts turn to his family and friends, relishing the possibility of them attending the Games in person and watching him compete, which instils a familiar drive to deliver strong performances for their benefit.

The topic of the upcoming Olympic Games is a frequent fixture in daily and weekly conversations with teammates, family members, and friends, serving as a constant motivator through the grueling cycles of training and personal sacrifice.

Charasika noted that family members often express boundless faith in his Olympic prospects, sometimes even outpacing his own belief, while playfully reminding him that he is on track to become an Olympian representing his country.

Acknowledging the demanding nature of high-performance sport, Harris spoke about the mental challenge of investing in daily routines and accepting personal sacrifices while knowing that the ultimate goal remains distant and without absolute guarantees.

The significance of hosting the Olympic tournament on home soil cannot be overstated for the American programme, particularly given the extended absence of the UnitedSates men's field hockey team from the premier global showcase.

Charasika emphasised how special it feels to wear the red, white, and blue in front of a domestic crowd, noting that it has been quite a long time since the men's programme experienced such a prominent platform at the Olympic level.

In assessing the team's ongoing development, Charasika highlighted physical fitness as a primary focal point, explaining that the squad is striving to surpass opponents in stamina to enhance both attacking effectiveness and defensive solidity.

Tactical adjustments are also being implemented carefully to maximise the specific strengths of the current player pool, ensuring the team can compete credibly against the world's leading hockey nations when the tournament commences in California.

Head coach Allan Law has overseen significant progress within the programme, particularly regarding the physical conditioning of the athletes, according to observations shared by the experienced members of the national squad during the recent interviews.

However, Harris pointed out that a persistent challenge facing the American side involves bridging the competitive gap between seasoned veterans and less experienced members of the broader player pool as preparations continue to intensify.

With some squad members competing professionally in Europe while others participate in a centralised domestic group, managing limited training time together remains a logistical hurdle that requires careful coordination from the coaching staff.

Looking ahead, the team aims to eventually centralise the entire group to foster greater cohesion, ensuring that players build seamless familiarity on the pitch despite the inherent difficulties posed by geographical separation and club commitments.

Opinions regarding the adequacy of the remaining two-year window vary within the squad, reflecting the distinct challenges faced by athletes balancing technical refinement, tactical understanding, and physical preparation ahead of the Games.

Charasika suggested that while two years is sufficient time to achieve optimal fitness levels, the timeline for implementing complex tactical objectives could prove either remarkably brief or surprisingly lengthy depending on the team's specific targets.

Conversely, Harris admitted that the two-year horizon occasionally feels dauntingly short given the multitude of elements that require fixing or continuous improvement, leaving a lingering sensation that time is running out quickly.

Despite these pressures, a collective sense of investment pervades the squad, with every player demonstrating a fierce commitment to working collaboratively, remaining competitive, and executing all necessary preparations ahead of the home Olympics.

Beyond individual and team ambitions, both athletes expressed a profound desire to leave a lasting legacy for the sport of field hockey within the United States, aiming to inspire future generations to pick up a stick.

Recalling his own upbringing in Kentucky, where he was the only male playing field hockey for an extended period, Charasika noted encouraging signs of local development with a few young boys now participating at his former club.

By setting a positive example and demonstrating that dedication can yield extraordinary results, Charasika hopes to show young boys across the country that they can achieve their dreams through hard work and perseverance.

Harris echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of inspiring the next generation to sustain and grow men's field hockey within the United States by delivering strong performances that showcase the sport's viability.

As the countdown to Los Angeles 2028 continues, the American men's and women's national teams remain focused on their daily training regimens, physical conditioning, and tactical evolution under the guidance of the coaching staff.

The upcoming years will provide critical opportunities for the squads to address squad cohesion, refine their competitive strategies, and build momentum leading into the historic home Olympic tournament in the United States.
