City were forced to respond twice after being pegged back by the German side, eventually securing the points through Haaland’s decisive finish from an Elliot Anderson cross. The result moves City to seventh in the standings after four matches.

The visitors initially took the lead in the 37th minute when a Castello Lukeba own goal broke the deadlock. Leipzig responded early in the second half through Ridle Baku, before Enzo Fernández restored City's advantage in the 58th minute.

Leipzig equalised for a second time via Antonio Nusa, who capitalised on a pass from Christopher Nkunku. Haaland, who had been relatively quiet throughout the contest, then arrived at the back post to settle the match with his 13th touch.

Speaking after the match, Haaland emphasised the need for his team to show more ruthlessness in front of goal. He noted that the side must work on their collective play and ability to kill off games earlier when in a leading position.

Manager Enzo Maresca expressed satisfaction with the result, particularly following back-to-back Premier League defeats against Aston Villa and Brighton. He acknowledged the difficulty of playing away in Germany but praised his team's response to the pressure.

The victory marks Haaland's 13th goal in nine career appearances against RB Leipzig, making them his most frequent victims in professional football. The striker has now scored 62 goals in 61 Champions League appearances.

Leipzig, managed by former City defender Martin Demichelis, tested goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma throughout the evening. Both sides hit the woodwork in the closing stages as the game remained open until the final whistle.

City will now look to carry this momentum into their upcoming domestic fixtures. The squad is scheduled to return to action in three days, with the manager highlighting the importance of maintaining focus as they navigate a busy calendar.

The match took place against a backdrop of significant off-field tension following an independent commission's recent finding that Manchester City breached over 100 Premier League financial regulations between 2009 and 2018. The club is currently preparing an appeal against the decision.

The atmosphere at Anfield was notably hostile, with home supporters jeering the visitors throughout the contest. Despite the pressure, Enzo Maresca’s team managed to neutralize the environment as the first half progressed, with neither side creating clear-cut opportunities before the interval.

The game remained scoreless until the 62nd minute, when Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch was sent off after receiving a second yellow card. The numerical advantage proved decisive, as Manchester City capitalized on the space to dominate the final half-hour.

Erling Haaland broke the deadlock in the 65th minute, firing home a rebound after a shot from substitute Jérémy Doku was initially parried. The breakthrough shifted the momentum entirely in favour of the visitors.

Doku doubled the lead just three minutes later, expertly curling a strike into the top-right corner. Rayan Cherki then completed the scoring in the 78th minute, finding space behind the Liverpool defence to secure the emphatic result.

Liverpool had threatened earlier in the second half, with Gianluigi Donnarumma forced to make saves from Lewis Koumas and Gravenberch. Alexis Mac Allister also went close, but the home side struggled to maintain their intensity after the dismissal.

Manchester City midfielder Elliot Anderson suggested that the external criticism surrounding the club has served to unify the squad. "We've got to stick together," he said. "It gives you that determination to come out here, everyone is against you, and turn them over."

The defeat leaves Liverpool in ninth position, currently nine points behind the league leaders. The result marks a significant setback for the Reds, who are looking to secure a place in the Champions League this season.

The legal uncertainty surrounding Manchester City continues to dominate the discourse in English football. While the team remains focused on their on-field performance, the potential for future sanctions, including points deductions or expulsion, remains a prominent concern.

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville noted the difficulty of the current situation, stating, "We're sat here not knowing what it means. City supporters will be delighted, but I don't think they recognise right now the stain, the stigma and the damage this is going to do to them."

The Premier League has yet to announce specific sanctions following the commission's findings. The appeal process is expected to continue for several months, casting a shadow over the current domestic campaign.

BBC football writer Phil McNulty suggested that the current league table is subject to an unofficial asterisk while the legal proceedings remain unresolved. The lack of a clear timeline for a final decision has created widespread frustration among observers.

Jamie Carragher expressed concern regarding the impact of the delay on the integrity of the competition. "This has to be done before the end of the season," he said. "There's no way this can carry on to the end of the season because we're all getting kidded."

The financial charges relate to allegations that Manchester City arranged sham deals to inflate revenues and reduce costs by over £900 million. Liverpool, having finished as runners-up to City on three occasions in the last 12 years, have been particularly vocal regarding the matter.

Manchester City underwent a significant squad overhaul during the 2026 summer transfer window, spending approximately £460 million. This figure represents a new Premier League record for a single transfer window, following the departure of former manager Pep Guardiola.

The club's recent history has been defined by a period of dominance, but the current investigation threatens to undermine those achievements. There is ongoing speculation that previous titles won during the period of the charges could be stripped.

Liverpool’s last home defeat in the Premier League prior to this match occurred in February, when they were also beaten 2-1 by Manchester City. The result highlights the consistent challenge City have posed to their rivals.

As the season progresses, the focus will remain on whether the club can maintain their form amidst the legal proceedings. The players and staff are expected to continue their preparations for upcoming fixtures despite the external pressure.

The Premier League continues to monitor the situation closely as the appeal process begins. For now, Manchester City remain the team to beat, though the long-term consequences of the independent commission's findings remain entirely uncertain.
