The Red Devils sit 21st in the league phase table with three points from three matches and are winless in nine consecutive games across all competitions. Their last victory in Europe came on September 10 against Sabah, followed by a challenging sequence that has left them 17th in the Premier League. Roma make the trip to Manchester positioned 15th in the Champions League standings, having suffered only one competitive defeat all season.

Carrick faces significant selection problems due to injuries, with Benjamin Sesko, Patrick Dorgu, Marcus Rashford, Manuel Ugarte and Luke Shaw unavailable. However, central defender Leny Yoro returns to the squad after serving a suspension during their recent European outing against Como.

Roma travel to England without several key personnel, including Paulo Dybala, Mile Svilar, Manu Kone and Lorenzo Pellegrini. Furthermore, second-choice goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini failed a late fitness test due to a back injury sustained in training, forcing the Italian side to hand a start to third-choice goalkeeper Devis Vasquez.

Manager Michael Carrick spoke ahead of the encounter about the magnitude of the occasion and the challenge posed by their opponents. He acknowledged that the opposition has experienced a very good start to the campaign and emphasized that his squad is eager to test themselves against high-calibre teams in this prestigious tournament.

Reflecting on past encounters between the two clubs, Carrick looked back fondly upon Manchester United's famous seven-to-one victory over Roma nearly two decades ago. As a player, Carrick himself scored twice during that memorable fixture at Old Trafford, though the current team faces a vastly different and more urgent set of circumstances tonight.

Life has proven complicated for the managerial staff due to squad limitations, particularly regarding available cover at left-back and in the attacking line. Analysts and former players have debated the club's trajectory, while supporters at Old Trafford continue to voice their discontent regarding the ownership and overall direction of the institution.

Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini has overseen a largely positive season domestically and in Europe, though the Giallorossi suffered a narrow four-to-three defeat to Real Madrid earlier in the campaign after leading late in the match. Their tactical setup features Donyell Malen leading the attack alongside creative support from Rodrigo Mora and Matias Soule.

The Italian visitors deployed a back three featuring Leonardo Balerdi rather than Evan N'Dicka, while Devyn Rensch and Wesley occupy the wing-back positions. In midfield, Bryan Cristante and Marten de Roon anchor the team as they look to exploit United's recent defensive vulnerabilities at Old Trafford.

Manchester United lined up with Senne Lammens in goal behind a defensive unit containing Diogo Dalot, Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire and Ayden Heaven. Carlos Baleba and Kobbie Mainoo partnered in central midfield, with Amad Diallo, Matheus Cunha and captain Bruno Fernandes supporting Bryan Mbeumo in the attacking third.

The atmosphere at Old Trafford has been tense following consecutive domestic and European setbacks, including a two-nil defeat to Chelsea at the weekend. With scrutiny intensifying around the coaching staff, reports indicate that upcoming fixtures before the international break could prove decisive for the leadership team.

In the evening's other high-profile European fixtures, Serie A champions Inter Milan travel to Rotterdam to face Feyenoord at Stadion De Kuip. Cristian Chivu's side are looking to recover from a three-one defeat in the Milan derby against rivals AC Milan, which knocked them three points off the domestic summit.

Inter's European campaign has also experienced turbulence, featuring defeats to Real Madrid and Club Brugge before a hard-fought victory over Shakhtar Donetsk. The Nerazzurri are without the suspended Alessandro Bastoni alongside injured personnel such as Lautaro Martinez, Curtis Jones, Luis Henrique and John Stones.

Feyenoord enter the contest aiming to build upon previous home success in the league phase, having already defeated Como at De Kuip. Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side contend with several squad absences including Jakub Moder, Bart Nieuwkoop, Gijs Smal, Jeremiah St. Juste, Thomas Beelen and Jordan Bos.

Both matches form part of a busy night of UEFA Champions League action across the continent, with teams fighting for vital points to secure automatic qualification or play-off berths in the expanded league phase format as the competition reaches its midway point.
