The 44-year-old, who retired from international cricket earlier this year, expressed his shock at the decision and admitted he is currently unsure about his next steps in professional cricket.

Anderson has been a cornerstone of the Lancashire attack for over two decades, having made his debut for the county back in 2002. His departure signals a major transition for both the player and the club.

During his illustrious career, Anderson became the most successful fast bowler in the history of Test cricket, claiming 704 wickets for England. His contributions to Lancashire have been equally vital during his domestic appearances.

The veteran bowler noted that the news of his exit was unexpected, leaving him to contemplate whether he wishes to pursue opportunities with other counties or conclude his playing career entirely.

Lancashire has undergone a period of restructuring, and the decision to part ways with such an experienced figure reflects the club's evolving strategy regarding their bowling lineup for the upcoming seasons.

Throughout his time at Old Trafford, Anderson played a pivotal role in several championship campaigns, providing leadership and expertise to younger bowlers who have come through the club's academy system.

His international retirement in July 2026 at Lord's against the West Indies brought the curtain down on a record-breaking career that spanned 22 years at the highest level of the sport.

Since stepping away from the England setup, Anderson had transitioned into a coaching role, working closely with the national side's bowling attack during the latter part of the summer.

The uncertainty surrounding his domestic future now becomes a primary focus for the veteran, who has maintained a high level of fitness despite his advanced age by professional sporting standards.

Supporters and teammates have expressed their gratitude for his service, acknowledging that his influence on the game at both domestic and international levels remains profound and widely respected.

The decision comes as a surprise to many observers who expected Anderson to continue in a player-coach capacity or at least remain associated with the Lancashire setup for the foreseeable future.

As the domestic off-season progresses, the cricket community will be watching closely to see if Anderson decides to sign with another county or if he chooses to focus solely on his coaching ambitions.

For now, the focus remains on the legacy he leaves behind at Lancashire, a club where he has been a permanent fixture since his teenage years and a symbol of consistency.

Further announcements regarding his future plans are expected in the coming weeks as he weighs his options and discusses potential roles within the sport.
