The former NCAA doubles champion and professional player returns to Knoxville to join Alison Ojeda's coaching staff.

The University of Tennessee women's tennis programme has announced the appointment of former men's tennis standout Pat Harper as an assistant coach. Harper returns to the Knoxville campus following a three-year stint competing on the professional tennis circuit.

Head coach Alison Ojeda confirmed the hiring on Wednesday, expressing her enthusiasm for bringing a former national champion into the fold. Ojeda highlighted Harper's deep connection to the university and his understanding of the requirements for elite performance.

"I am very excited that Pat is joining our program as a coach," Ojeda stated. "There's something special about being a Tennessee Vol, and Pat shares that same joy and commitment to excellence. He knows what it takes to be a national champion."

Harper, a native of Brisbane, Australia, enjoyed a highly successful collegiate career at Tennessee. He secured the 2021 NCAA Doubles Championship alongside partner Adam Walton and earned All-American honours in each of his final three full seasons.

During his time as a student-athlete, Harper recorded a 96-38 record in doubles competition. This tally places him 11th on the university's all-time list for doubles victories, cementing his status as one of the programme's most accomplished players.

His collegiate tenure included significant team achievements, such as four consecutive NCAA Super Regional appearances between 2019 and 2023. He was also a key contributor to the team's 2021 SEC Tournament title and two Final Four runs.

Following his graduation, Harper transitioned to the professional tour. He currently holds a world doubles ranking of No. 160, having reached a career-high ranking of No. 115 in January 2026. His professional resume includes nine doubles titles.

Among his professional achievements, Harper has secured six ATP Challenger crowns. Throughout his time on the circuit, he has competed alongside notable Tennessee alumni, including Johannus Monday and Shunsuke Mitsui, maintaining strong ties to his former teammates.

In his new role, Harper will work alongside head coach Alison Ojeda and assistant coach Martim Prata. Prata, who played alongside Harper during all five of his seasons at Tennessee, welcomed the addition of his long-time teammate to the staff.

"Pat is a true VFL who has a tremendous love and passion for Tennessee," Prata said. "Having won an SEC team championship alongside him, I know the kind of teammate, competitor, and person he is. He is a great addition."

Harper expressed his excitement regarding the transition from professional competition to the collegiate coaching ranks. He noted that the opportunity to return to "Rocky Top" was a significant factor in his decision to join the Lady Vols.

"It's a special feeling coming back to the place where I had so many great memories on and off the tennis court," Harper remarked. "Now, working with the women's team, I can share those experiences and that knowledge from the pro tour."

The appointment has been met with support from within the tennis community. Adam Walton, Harper's former doubles partner, praised his work ethic and energy, noting that he expects Harper to be a pivotal influence on the current roster.

J.B. Bowling, the Executive Associate Athletics Director at Tennessee, also lauded the hire. He described Harper as a "consummate teammate" who consistently elevated the performance of those around him during his playing days.

The Lady Vols programme, led by Ojeda, aims to leverage Harper's championship experience to continue its development. Ojeda noted that the roster aspires to reach the same heights Harper achieved during his own playing career.

Harper's return to the university marks a new chapter for both the individual and the programme. He is expected to begin his duties immediately, focusing on team culture and the technical development of the student-athletes.

The Tennessee women's tennis team continues to build its reputation within the SEC. With the addition of a former national champion to the coaching staff, the university looks to strengthen its competitiveness in upcoming seasons.

As Harper settles into his coaching role, he will focus on implementing the lessons learned from his time on the professional circuit. His goal is to assist the Lady Vols in achieving their objectives for the upcoming year.

The university remains committed to fostering an environment where student-athletes can thrive. By bringing back former standouts like Harper, the athletic department aims to maintain a strong link between its history and its future success.

Further details regarding the team's schedule and upcoming fixtures will be released by the university in due course. Harper is expected to be on the court for the start of the team's next training block.

Volunteers head coach Josh Heupel has described the recovery of linebackers coach William Inge as a true miracle following a serious medical emergency.

Tennessee Volunteers head coach Josh Heupel has shared an encouraging update regarding the health of linebackers coach William Inge. Following his team's 24-17 victory over Arkansas on Saturday, Heupel announced that Inge is expected to be discharged from the hospital next week.

Inge, 52, has been receiving medical care after being hospitalised on September 25. The coach missed the team's recent fixtures, including the match against Texas, due to an undisclosed medical issue that the university described as a personal health matter.

Addressing the media after the game in Fayetteville, Heupel spoke candidly about the severity of the situation. He stated that the coach had been fighting for his life and that his recovery has been nothing short of remarkable.

"Coach Inge faced a ton of adversity and was really fighting for his life and kind of came out of nowhere," Heupel said. "Sometimes it's rare in this world that you get to see a true miracle right before your eyes, but that's truly what we've been able to see."

Heupel expressed his gratitude to the supporters and the wider college football community for their continued support during this period. He noted that the outpouring of prayers from the university and fans had been a significant source of strength for the family.

"If you ever question the power of prayer, anybody that's seen this can attest to the power of prayer," Heupel added. "I just want to thank our Vol family and people across the country inside of college football that have had him in their prayers."

The head coach confirmed that Inge is currently doing well and is preparing to transition to the next phase of his recovery. He expects the assistant coach to leave the hospital by the middle of next week to begin a rehabilitation process.

Inge joined the Tennessee coaching staff in 2024. His appointment followed a successful two-year tenure at the University of Washington, where he served as the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the Huskies.

During his time in Washington, Inge played a key role in the team's defensive success. He helped guide the Huskies to the 2023 Pac-12 championship and an appearance in the 2024 College Football Playoff national championship game.

The Tennessee football programme has rallied around the coach throughout his hospitalisation. Players and staff members have been seen wearing shirts featuring the slogan "Inge Built" during recent games, including the match against Auburn on October 3, to show their support.

The news of Inge's progress came on the same day that the Volunteers secured a significant win against Arkansas. The victory marked the first time Tennessee has won in Fayetteville since 2001, providing a boost to the team's season.

In the match, quarterback George MacIntyre made his first career start for the Volunteers, throwing for 247 yards and a touchdown. Running back DeSean Bishop also contributed significantly to the result, recording 138 rushing yards.

The win improved Tennessee's standing in the SEC as they look toward the remainder of their schedule. The team currently holds a 5-1 record overall, with a 2-1 record in conference play following the hard-fought victory.

The Volunteers are now preparing for their next challenge. They are scheduled to return to Knoxville to face Alabama at Neyland Stadium on October 17, with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m. ET.

As the team shifts focus to the upcoming fixture against the Crimson Tide, the positive news regarding Inge has provided a lift to the entire organisation. The coaching staff and players continue to monitor his recovery closely.

Inge is now in the 28th season of his coaching career, having built a reputation for developing linebackers across various collegiate programmes. His return to health remains the primary focus for the Tennessee football family.

The university has maintained a supportive stance throughout the ordeal, ensuring that the coach and his family have the necessary resources. The "Inge Built" initiative remains a visible sign of the unity within the squad.

While the specific nature of the medical issue remains private, the sentiment from the coaching staff is one of relief and optimism. Heupel’s comments reflect the close-knit nature of the Tennessee football programme.

Fans across the country have continued to send messages of support to the coach and his family. The university has acknowledged this support as a vital component of the recovery process witnessed over the past few weeks.

With the rehabilitation process set to begin shortly, the focus for Inge will be on his long-term health. The Tennessee Volunteers will continue their season with the hope of welcoming their coach back to the fold in due course.
