Ukraine expresses deep outrage after the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturns the international ice hockey ban on Russia.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has overturned the international ban on Russia, allowing national teams to return to competition following a successful appeal by the Russian Ice Hockey Federation against the global governing body.

Russia had been suspended from competing in International Ice Hockey Federation events since February 2022 following the country's invasion of Ukraine, with the governing body ruling earlier this year that the exclusion would remain in place.

The legal challenge was heard in person at the headquarters of the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland, leading to the decision to set aside the suspension and clear the path for a return to international action.

In response to the verdict, the Hockey Federation of Ukraine released a statement expressing deep outrage at the outcome while acknowledging the authority and status of the sporting court in the matter.

The Ukrainian governing body argued that the security threats which formed the original basis for the suspension had not disappeared, making the decision to allow Russian teams back into international competitions particularly unacceptable.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport stated that arguments brought forward by the International Ice Hockey Federation citing safety, security and other concerns were not supported by sufficient evidence during the proceedings.

Under the ruling, Russia are now set to participate in International Ice Hockey Federation events throughout the 2026-27 season, including both the upcoming men's and women's world championships.

The International Ice Hockey Federation expressed disappointment with the final ruling, maintaining that its original decisions were strictly necessary to protect participant safety and safeguard the competitive integrity of tournaments.

Despite disagreeing with the outcome, the global governing body confirmed it respects the authority of the court and will act in accordance with the ruling, though concerns regarding logistical and security assessments remain.

Germany is scheduled to host the men's world championships in May, and Frank Lutz, chairman of the German ice hockey federation, voiced strong opposition to the return of Russian national teams.

Lutz stated that allowing Russia to participate carries significant security-related, political and economic consequences for host nations, adding that organizers are currently evaluating the ruling alongside the international governing body.

Several other national federations joined Germany in condemning the decision, with Czech Ice Hockey secretary general Jan Cerny describing himself as very unpleasantly surprised by the verdict from Lausanne.

Cerny reaffirmed that the current stance of Czech ice hockey remains unchanged, emphasizing disagreement with Russian participation in international tournaments while the conflict in Ukraine continues.

The chairman of the Finnish Ice Hockey Federation, Heikki Hietanen, similarly criticized the verdict, describing the entire ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport as completely incomprehensible.

Ice Hockey UK released a statement noting disappointment with the outcome while confirming respect for the court's authority, and announced plans to analyze the potential implications for British national teams.

Meanwhile, a statement issued by the Russian Ice Hockey Federation welcomed the decision from the court and indicated readiness to work closely with the international governing body to facilitate the return of teams.

The international governing body declined to confirm whose tournament spots Russia might potentially take, pointing instead to practical implications for competitions that are already at an advanced stage of preparation.

Officials noted that the court rulings do not adequately consider practical implementation elements that cannot be adjusted immediately, creating logistical challenges for upcoming events on the international calendar.

Individual athletes from Russia were previously permitted to compete at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy under a neutral flag, although ice hockey competitors were excluded from that arrangement.

Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Russian men's team has claimed the World Championship title five times, while the women's national team has never won the tournament.

Ukraine's men's team recently qualified for the top-flight world championships for the first time in twenty years after securing promotion at the Division 1 tournament held in Poland.

National federations across Europe continue to assess the fallout from the legal decision as sport administrators prepare for upcoming international fixtures and tournament arrangements for the 2026-27 season.
