Unified champion David Benavidez will defend his belts against Michal Cieslak on December 5, temporarily delaying a potential clash with Jai Opetaia.

Unified WBA and WBO cruiserweight champion David Benavidez has officially confirmed his next bout, scheduling a high-stakes unification showdown against Polish WBC titlist Michal Cieslak. The championship clash is officially set to take place on December 5, forming part of a major boxing doubleheader announced on Friday.

The confirmation of this upcoming bout means that Australian cruiserweight star Jai Opetaia will have to wait for his heavily anticipated opportunity against the undefeated American. Benavidez and Opetaia had previously shared an intense in-ring face-off last month following Opetaia's victory over Norair Mikaeljan in Las Vegas.

During that dramatic encounter, Benavidez openly accepted a challenge from the Australian, telling the crowd that the matchup would deliver an exciting spectacle for boxing fans. However, those plans have now been adjusted, with Benavidez taking on Cieslak first in pursuit of further championship hardware.

Benavidez enters the ring carrying an impressive professional record of 32 victories without a single defeat, having secured 26 of those wins by knockout. His most recent outing in May resulted in a dominant sixth-round stoppage victory over Gilberto Ramirez, further establishing his dominance in the division.

Meanwhile, Michal Cieslak brings a formidable record of 28 wins and two defeats into the December contest, with 22 victories coming inside the distance. The Polish fighter earned his WBC belt last June by stopping Jean Pascal to claim the vacant world title.

Cieslak's previous career defeat occurred four years ago when British contender Lawrence Okolie edged him out on the judges' scorecards at London's O2 Arena. Since that setback, the challenger has worked his way back to championship contention, culminating in this upcoming three-belt unification fight.

Despite postponing the much-discussed Opetaia matchup, Benavidez has made it clear that a fight against the Australian remains firmly on his radar for the future. The American star outlined an ambitious three-fight plan under a prospective new contract that includes several elite opponents.

Speaking about his future roadmap in the sport, Benavidez revealed his intentions to secure bouts against the division's biggest names after taking care of business in December. Alongside Opetaia, the unified champion has set his sights on Artur Beterbiev and Oleksandr Usyk.

Addressing the potential matchup with Usyk, Benavidez noted that discussions could take place either within the cruiserweight division or possibly moving up to heavyweight. Such a matchup would represent a monumental test for the American as he continues to build his legacy.

Benavidez emphasized his commitment to facing the toughest challenges available in professional boxing rather than avoiding elite competition. He stated that his primary goal is to share the ring with the best fighters currently plying their trade in the sport.

The ongoing division dynamics have kept fans and analysts speculating about the future landscape of the cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions. With multiple governing body titles at stake in December, the winner will hold immense leverage in shaping the division's next era.

Promotional teams are expected to finalize the remaining undercard bouts for the December 5 event in the coming weeks. Ticket details and broadcast information for the championship doubleheader will also be released by the organizing promoters shortly.

As training camps officially get underway, both Benavidez and Cieslak are preparing for what promises to be a physical and tactical encounter. The stakes could not be higher as the division moves closer to crowning a unified ruler.

The broader boxing calendar for the winter season continues to fill up with significant matchups across multiple weight classes. Fighters are increasingly looking to secure legacy-defining bouts before the conclusion of the calendar year.

Benavidez has repeatedly insisted that he no longer requires a matchup against Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez to cement his historical standing in the sport. Instead, the cruiserweight powerhouse is forging his own path through dominant performances and unification bouts.

The tactical battle between Benavidez's relentless pressure and Cieslak's technical power will be the focal point of the upcoming winter promotion. Both athletes possess significant knockout power, suggesting the bout may not go the full distance.

Boxing enthusiasts worldwide will be monitoring the cruiserweight division closely as December approaches and preparations intensify. The outcome of this upcoming unification fight will undoubtedly alter the pound-for-pound rankings and future promotional landscapes.

With official confirmation now secured, the countdown has begun for one of the most intriguing cruiserweight battles of the year. Both camps are fully focused on delivering peak physical condition ahead of the opening bell on December 5.

Reflecting on his encounter with Opetaia last month, Benavidez praised the Australian's fighting style and warrior mentality. He previously told reporters that he liked the challenger because he also enjoys engaging in hard-fought, exciting battles inside the squared circle.

The scheduled cruiserweight unification bout highlights an eventful stretch for the sport's upper weight classes. Promoters continue to piece together lucrative cards, ensuring that combat sports fans enjoy a blockbuster finish to the boxing calendar.

Former British and IBF international middleweight champion Brad Pauls is urgently seeking a December fight after his November appearance was called off.

Former British and IBF international middleweight champion Brad Pauls is actively working to secure a replacement fight before the end of the year following the sudden cancellation of his scheduled bout which was originally set to take place on November 13. The 33-year-old fighter from Newquay expressed significant disappointment over the setback as he looks to maintain crucial momentum within the competitive middleweight division.

Pauls is currently aiming for a ring return in early December, with potential dates being evaluated to ensure he remains active ahead of major scheduled commitments early next year. The cancellation forces the Cornish boxer to adjust his calendar significantly as he works behind the scenes with his promotional team to finalize a new opponent and venue.

Reflecting on the unexpected disruption, Pauls did not hide his frustration regarding the lost opportunity on November 13. Speaking on social media, the experienced middleweight admitted that the cancellation was far from ideal for his career trajectory at this crucial stage of his professional journey.

Expressing his immediate mindset, Pauls stated that he and his team are scrambling to find a new date before the Christmas holidays. He indicated that discussions are underway for a bout arriving a couple of weeks into December, with a formal announcement expected to be made public soon.

Maintaining activity is a central priority for Pauls as he eyes a major return to the big stage in February. The 33-year-old emphasized that getting through a competitive test before the turn of the year is massively important for his overall preparation and confidence inside the ring.

The veteran fighter wants to afford himself every possible advantage ahead of the lucrative and high-profile matchups lined up for the early months of next year. Staying sharp and avoiding prolonged inactivity are critical components of his training philosophy as he navigates this latest professional crossroads in his career.

Pauls enters this transitional phase following a demanding stretch of fights that have tested his resilience at both the domestic and international levels. His professional record currently stands at 25 fights, featuring three defeats and one draw, highlighting a career built on tough challenges and high-stakes encounters.

In his most recent outing back in June, Pauls suffered a defeat to Bradley Goldsmith while contesting the vacant IBF International middleweight title. That competitive loss marked only the third blemish on his professional ledger and served as a temporary stumbling block in his upward trajectory.

Prior to the Goldsmith encounter, Pauls enjoyed a notable high point in March when he delivered a stunning stoppage victory against the highly rated Shakiel Thompson. That emphatic knockout win immediately reignited conversations regarding his world title aspirations and cemented his status as a premier domestic operator.

The journey to domestic prominence saw Pauls capture the coveted British middleweight title in July 2024 with a stoppage win over Nathan Heaney in their highly anticipated rematch. That victory provided sweet redemption after the pair had fought to a hard-fought draw four months prior.

Following his British title triumph, Pauls stepped up in class in December 2024 to challenge Denzel Bentley for the European middleweight crown. Although he came up short in that European championship bid, the experience added vital championship rounds to his extensive tactical résumé.

Activity levels fluctuated during the subsequent period, with Pauls appearing on a low-key card in Torquay before re-establishing himself on major television platforms against Thompson. Those varied experiences have taught the Newquay native the value of persistence within the unforgiving professional boxing landscape.

Cornish boxing history also records Pauls' achievements fondly, as he famously became the first fighter from Cornwall to capture a British title since 1939 when he defeated Heaney. That milestone remains a proud chapter in his sporting life and a testament to his dedication.

The middleweight division continues to evolve rapidly with domestic and international contenders jostling for position across various promotional banners. Pauls remains firmly fixed on forcing his way back into championship contention through determined performances and victories against tough opposition.

As the boxing calendar moves toward the final months of the year, fighters frequently encounter shifting schedules and promotional adjustments. Pauls' ability to secure a viable December opponent will dictate how smoothly he transitions into his planned February campaign.

Boxing fans and pundits will await official confirmation from Pauls regarding his rescheduled December appearance. The coming weeks will reveal whether the former champion can successfully salvage his late-year schedule and set the stage for a busy campaign ahead.

The setback in June against Bradley Goldsmith demonstrated the fine margins operating at the top level of the sport. Pauls has proven throughout his career that he possesses the resilience to bounce back from adversity and return stronger in subsequent outings.

His spectacular knockout of Shakiel Thompson earlier in the year remains a benchmark for the kind of explosive performances he aims to deliver regularly. Replicating that kind of form in December will send a clear message to the rest of the 160-pound division.

Promotional discussions are expected to yield clarity regarding the new December date in the near future. Pauls remains fully committed to his training camp routine in Cornwall, ensuring he stays in peak physical condition while waiting for the rescheduled fight announcement.

With a potentially massive year of boxing ahead in 2027, the coming weeks represent a crucial building block for the veteran middleweight. Securing a win before Christmas will provide the ideal springboard for his ambitious plans in the new year.

Former world boxing champion Joe Cordina is standing trial at Cardiff Magistrates' Court facing a charge of assault by beating.

Former boxing world champion Joe Cordina was retaliating during an altercation at a petrol station in Cardiff, a court has been told during an ongoing trial. Cordina is standing trial at Cardiff Magistrates' Court facing a charge of assault by beating relating to an incident that occurred on 27 February.

The legal proceedings commenced following an incident involving an individual named Jamie O'Brien at a Texaco garage located in the Pentwyn area of Cardiff. The altercation came to public attention days later after a video filmed by a witness at the petrol station was published online by WalesOnline.

During the court proceedings, prosecutor Alex Orndal detailed the sequence of events captured on CCTV footage which spanned several minutes. The visual evidence showed Cordina filling up his vehicle before walking over to O'Brien, who was standing on a nearby pavement.

According to the prosecution, O'Brien pushed Cordina with his shoulder during their initial interaction at the scene. Cordina subsequently punched O'Brien with sufficient force to knock him to the ground, before proceeding to push him repeatedly while he was down.

Orndal told the court that Cordina had initiated the confrontation and was not protecting himself, but rather retaliating against the other man. The situation escalated further as aggression developed from O'Brien following the initial exchange of blows.

The court heard evidence that Cordina raised a golf club while O'Brien lunged at him, leading to a number of further blows being exchanged by the individuals. O'Brien was eventually restrained and posed no further threat, though Cordina threw an additional punch at him.

Initially, the former world champion faced two distinct counts of assault by beating stemming from the February incident. However, Judge Charlotte Murphy dismissed the second charge part-way into the trial after ruling that there was no case to answer.

When interviewed by police on 11 March, Cordina formally denied the charges brought against him regarding the altercation. He explained to officers that he had initially noticed O'Brien staring at him and initially thought the individual simply wanted a photograph.

Cordina stated during his police interview that, having been shoved by O'Brien, he felt threatened by the escalation. He claimed that he punched the man later out of instinct due to O'Brien's sudden actions at the petrol station.

Furthermore, Cordina told police investigators that O'Brien had threatened to stab him during the confrontation. He also alleged that O'Brien made threats to blow up both his own house and his mother's house.

Defence barrister Tom Crowther KC presented arguments suggesting that O'Brien had been identified from the video circulating online by family members. Crowther raised concerns regarding O'Brien's behaviour and suggested the incident may have been a setup orchestrated against the boxer.

During the hearing, Crowther asked investigating officer PC Samuel Penman to review the video footage that had circulated online. The defence argued it was apparent that individuals were watching and waiting for Cordina at the location.

Officer Penman told the court that while it was not entirely obvious from the footage, he agreed that the person filming appeared to have started recording before any physical altercation began. Penman also admitted it was a mistake not to question O'Brien's sister about her concerns.

The court had previously been told that O'Brien's sister informed police her brother hated Cordina and she feared he had sought the boxer out. The officer acknowledged failing to follow up properly on her claims regarding a potential vendetta.

Testifying in his own defence, Cordina explained to the court that members of the public recognised him multiple times every day. He noted that interactions were generally positive, with people frequently shaking his hand or asking for a photograph.

However, the court heard that approximately a fortnight prior to the petrol station incident, police had informed Cordina of a threat to his life. The defendant stated that this warning left him deeply shocked and worried for his safety.

Cordina denied having any prior personal knowledge of O'Brien, despite suggestions that the two men might have boxed together previously. Explaining his actions, he told the court he was merely reacting to feeling threatened rather than seeking trouble.

Asked about pushing O'Brien down and telling him not to do it again, Cordina maintained he was acting in self-protection. The defence also presented several character statements supporting the boxer, including comments from his agent Ian Bird.

Additionally, the Llanrumney Phoenix boxing club submitted a statement in support of Cordina, describing the former champion as an outstanding role model. Judge Murphy adjourned the hearing following the conclusion of evidence submissions in the case.

Judge Charlotte Murphy is scheduled to deliver her final judgement in the trial on Tuesday, 20 October. Legal arguments and witness testimonies concluded following the dismissal of the second assault charge earlier in the proceedings.

British cruiserweight Chris Billam-Smith has expressed his willingness to step in and face Deontay Wilder should Jai Opetaia be unable to fulfil his expected heavyweight clash.

Chris Billam-Smith has revealed he would be prepared to step up to the heavyweight division to face Deontay Wilder if the planned bout between the American and Jai Opetaia fails to materialise. The Bournemouth fighter remains focused on his upcoming cruiserweight contest but is keeping his options open for future high-profile encounters.

Billam-Smith is currently preparing for his scheduled fight against Cheavon Clarke, which is set to take place on November 7. Despite the magnitude of that upcoming challenge, the British boxer has made it clear that he is actively seeking the biggest names in the sport for his future career path.

Reports suggest that Opetaia is currently being lined up for a heavyweight appearance on the undercard of the Tyson Fury versus Anthony Joshua event. Promoter Dana White confirmed that discussions regarding a potential fight between Opetaia and Wilder have been ongoing, highlighting the Australian's willingness to face elite opposition.

White noted that Opetaia is prepared to test himself against dangerous opponents regardless of the weight disparity. He described the potential matchup as a significant challenge for the cruiserweight star, given Wilder's reputation for possessing immense punching power within the heavyweight division.

Billam-Smith has long held an interest in facing Opetaia, who is widely considered one of the premier fighters in the cruiserweight weight class. However, he acknowledges that the Australian's current trajectory towards heavyweight bouts and subsequent clashes with David Benavidez may delay their potential meeting.

Regarding the possibility of facing Wilder himself, Billam-Smith stated that he would not hesitate to take the opportunity if the chance arose. He emphasised that he has consistently maintained an interest in testing his skills against the former world champion throughout his professional career.

The British fighter clarified that his primary motivation is securing the biggest fights available rather than focusing exclusively on championship belts. While he values titles, he is prioritising high-profile bouts that define a fighter's legacy in the sport.

Billam-Smith remains cautious about looking too far into the future, citing the immediate threat posed by Cheavon Clarke. He noted that there is a necessary fear factor involved in his upcoming November bout, which prevents him from overlooking his next opponent.

If the proposed schedule for Opetaia proceeds as planned, Billam-Smith suggested he might instead target David Benavidez in the future. He expressed a belief that Benavidez could potentially defeat Opetaia, which would then open a different path for his own career trajectory.

The cruiserweight division continues to see significant movement, with top fighters increasingly looking toward crossover bouts. Billam-Smith's comments reflect a broader trend of elite boxers seeking challenges outside of their traditional weight classes to maximise their marketability.

Dana White's involvement in managing Opetaia’s career suggests that the proposed heavyweight move is being treated with serious intent. The prospect of an Opetaia-Wilder fight has generated considerable interest due to the contrasting styles and the risks involved for the smaller man.

For Billam-Smith, the coming weeks are dedicated to his preparation for Clarke. The outcome of that fight will likely influence his standing in the division and his ability to command the major fights he is currently targeting.

The boxing community will be watching the developments surrounding the Fury-Joshua undercard closely. Any changes to the proposed lineup could provide an opening for fighters like Billam-Smith to step into the spotlight on a global stage.

As it stands, Billam-Smith is not pursuing a permanent move to heavyweight. He views a potential fight with someone like Wilder as a unique, one-off opportunity to face a marquee name rather than a long-term change in his competitive focus.

The fighter's commitment to his craft is evident in his approach to the sport's current landscape. By remaining vocal about his ambitions, he ensures that his name remains in the conversation for potential high-stakes matchups in the coming year.

Fans of the sport are awaiting further confirmation regarding the official undercard for the upcoming major event. The inclusion of cruiserweights in heavyweight contests remains a point of contention and excitement among boxing analysts and supporters alike.

Billam-Smith's career has been defined by his willingness to take on tough challenges. His upcoming fight against Clarke is viewed as another critical step in maintaining his momentum within the competitive cruiserweight ranks.

The potential for a clash with Wilder represents a significant jump in competition level for Billam-Smith. However, his confidence in his own abilities suggests he is ready to embrace such a challenge should the circumstances align correctly.

As the November 7 date approaches, the focus will shift entirely to the ring. The result of that contest will ultimately dictate the next steps for Billam-Smith as he navigates his path through the boxing world.

The sport of boxing continues to evolve, with fighters increasingly dictating their own paths through strategic matchmaking. Billam-Smith is clearly positioning himself to be at the centre of these developments as he looks toward a busy and ambitious future.

UFC president Dana White praises Eddie Hearn for securing the UK venue but dismisses their ongoing promotional feud.

UFC president and Zuffa Boxing chief Dana White has publicly credited promoter Eddie Hearn for ensuring that the long-awaited heavyweight showdown between British boxing stars Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua will take place inside the United Kingdom rather than abroad.

The blockbuster heavyweight encounter is officially scheduled to be hosted at the iconic Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, marking a massive domestic homecoming for the two elite fighters after months of complex international negotiations regarding the final venue location.

Initial preferences and behind-the-scenes discussions involving various organizers, including elements within the American promotional landscape and prominent Saudi Arabian backers, had heavily favored staging the high-profile fixture at New York's historic Madison Square Garden.

However, Anthony Joshua and his long-time promoter Eddie Hearn steadfastly refused to compromise on their contractual rights, insisting with absolute firmness that the historic sporting encounter had to be staged on home soil for British supporters.

Speaking in detail on the 5 Live Boxing with Bunce podcast hosted by well-known broadcaster Steve Bunce, White acknowledged the relentless effort and determination required by the Matchroom Boxing chairman to keep the monumental event within British borders.

You've got to give credit to Eddie for really grinding that and making sure that it happened in the UK, White stated during his appearance on the combat sports podcast, recognizing his rival's persistence in the venue tug-of-war.

Despite the positive resolution regarding the physical location of the event, the build-up has been consistently overshadowed by a bitter public dispute over executive promotional roles involving White, Hearn, and veteran British promoter Frank Warren.

The upcoming heavyweight bout has been officially presented to the public as an unprecedented collaborative venture between Saudi boxing powerbroker Turki Alalshikh's publication, The Ring, and White's newly established Zuffa Boxing commercial entity.

Tensions between the promotional figureheads escalated sharply earlier this year following the official launch of Zuffa Boxing, leading to a public feud between Hearn and White that repeatedly threatened to derail the collaborative efforts behind the scenes.

Hearn had previously insisted publicly that White would have no operational involvement whatsoever in the promotion of the fixture, claiming flatly during media appearances that the American's participation simply would not be happening.

Doubts surrounding the structural organization and unified management of the fight card eventually prompted both Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua to step forward directly and host a joint news conference on September 30 to ease widespread public concerns.

Although Dana White was conspicuously absent from that particular media event held in London, he maintained an uncompromising stance regarding his operational responsibilities and authority for the actual night of the fight itself.

Me and my team will be producing the fight that night, White asserted during his extensive podcast interview, clarifying his expected logistical footprint and commercial involvement on the evening of the major competition.

I guess we'll call me one of the promoters of the event because you do have Frank Warren and Eddie Hearn that are both promoters too, promoting the event, the UFC executive added, outlining the multi-promoter structure of the venture.

Frank Warren serves as the primary promoter representing Tyson Fury, operating alongside Eddie Hearn who guides the storied career of Anthony Joshua under the established Matchroom Boxing promotional banner in the United Kingdom.

While Hearn has repeatedly maintained in interviews that White could not act as a formal promoter for the bout, the British promoter recently suggested a sudden willingness to sit down with his American counterpart to clear the air.

Hearn indicated to journalists that he was prepared to meet with White to discuss how the American could potentially fit into the collaborative promotional framework for the lucrative December fight card in the Welsh capital.

However, White quickly dismissed the necessity of any formal sit-down meeting, expressing his profound exhaustion and weariness with the ongoing public verbal sparring between the two high-profile promotional leaders.

I'm actually bored with this now. Who cares? This isn't about me and Eddie Hearn, White declared during the podcast, shifting the focus entirely back toward the two athletes who will ultimately trade blows inside the ring.

It's about AJ and Fury. It's about this heavyweight fight, White continued, emphasizing with strong conviction that the sheer magnitude of the athletic contest vastly supersedes any administrative or executive disagreements between promoters.

It's an Eddie show, not a Dana and Eddie show. It's boring now. This is about AJ and Fury, White added, reiterating firmly that the sporting spotlight rightly belongs to the fighters rather than the backroom staff.

This was never the Dana and Eddie show. It's been all the Eddie show, White concluded, attempting to draw a definitive and final line under the weeks of collaborative friction that have dominated boxing headlines.

The heavyweight clash is officially set for December 11, with the main card beginning late in the evening and the anticipated ringwalks stretching deep into the early hours of December 12 for international audiences.

Boxing fans and industry observers demonstrated unprecedented demand for the historic matchup, with tickets priced up to an astonishing 13,000 pounds completely selling out within a remarkable one-hour window via official Ticketmaster channels.

Discussions regarding the local logistics and crowd management in Cardiff have even raised the fascinating possibility of the Principality Stadium remaining open until 3:30am to safely accommodate the massive live audience in attendance.

The blockbuster event is also slated to be broadcast globally via Netflix, bringing the historic British heavyweight rivalry directly to millions of digital streaming subscribers around the world on fight night.

Adding substantial intrigue to the overall fight card, rumors have surfaced regarding potential marquee matchups on the undercard, including discussions involving cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia and former heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder.

As the December 11 date rapidly approaches, both training camps are expected to finalize their rigorous preparations and media schedules, leaving the complex promotional governance largely settled behind the scenes in Cardiff.

The ultimate resolution of the venue dispute ensures that British boxing fans will experience the long-awaited collision between Fury and Joshua live in Cardiff rather than across the Atlantic Ocean in the United States.

With tickets entirely exhausted and high-profile broadcast plans securely in place, attention now shifts decisively to the physical preparations of the two heavyweights as they train relentlessly for their monumental encounter.
