Russell Westbrook targets 2028 Olympic torchbearer role in Los Angeles

The recently retired NBA star outlined his ambitious post-playing goals after receiving recognition from the Los Angeles City Council.

Russell Westbrook targets 2028 Olympic torchbearer role in Los Angeles

Recently retired NBA star Russell Westbrook has set his sights on a prominent role at the upcoming Olympic Games. The former point guard has publicly stated his desire to serve as a torchbearer when Los Angeles hosts the prestigious multi-sport event in 2028.

Westbrook made his intentions clear following a special ceremony where he was honored by the Los Angeles City Council. The municipal recognition celebrated his extensive community service work and philanthropic investments across the local area.

"I'm putting this out now: I want to be in the presentation of Los Angeles, as it pertains to carrying the torch during the 2028 Olympics," Westbrook declared during the event on Friday, expressing a deep personal connection to his hometown.

The former Most Valuable Player announced his retirement from professional basketball in August. His decision to step away concluded a remarkable 18-season career in the NBA that featured numerous individual accolades and team achievements.

To help position himself for the coveted torchbearer role, Westbrook has challenged employees at his Why Not? Foundation. He wants his charitable organization to significantly expand its philanthropic footprint and community outreach initiatives ahead of the Games.

"To be able to carry the torch, you have to be able to position yourself to have your hands in so many different areas," Westbrook explained regarding his wide-ranging community efforts and philanthropic ambitions for the city.

The retired athlete emphasized his commitment to various societal sectors, including education and technology. He noted that he is actively working to impact many people through advancements in energy, healthcare, and mental health wellness.

"Every aspect, I want to have my hands in to help any way I can," Westbrook added, detailing a comprehensive approach to civic improvement that mirrors the relentless energy he consistently displayed on the basketball court.

Westbrook's personal history with Los Angeles runs exceptionally deep. He attended Leuzinger High School before playing his college basketball locally at UCLA, building a foundational connection with the Southern California sporting community.

His professional career also included stints with both hometown NBA franchises. Westbrook represented the Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Clippers, further cementing his status as a quintessential sporting figure for the metropolis.

Los Angeles city councilwoman Heather Hutt praised the veteran athlete during the ceremony. She formally saluted Westbrook as a dedicated humanitarian in recognition of his substantial investments in local schools and athletic facilities.

Councilwoman Hutt also highlighted his contributions to various local development projects. These targeted investments have aimed to uplift underprivileged youth and improve community infrastructure throughout the greater Los Angeles area.

"Anything I do from basketball to business is based around L.A.," Westbrook stated passionately when reflecting on his lifelong bond with the city. "I wear L.A. on my sleeve. The way I operated, even the way I talk and walk is LA."

The veteran guard insisted that his distinctive local identity will never change. He emphasized that his ultimate legacy will not merely be measured by basketball statistics, but by how much he gives back to local residents.

"My legacy will be based on how much I give back to the people of L.A.," Westbrook reiterated, signaling a clear shift in his primary life priorities following his departure from the demanding professional basketball circuit.

Westbrook previously tasted international success when he won a men's basketball gold medal with the United States national team at the 2012 London Olympics, adding a premier international accolade to his extensive trophy cabinet.

Over the course of his glittering 18-year career, the explosive guard earned nine All-Star selections. He was also crowned the NBA's Most Valuable Player in 2017 after a historic individual campaign with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Furthermore, Westbrook retired as the NBA's all-time leader in triple-doubles. His relentless style of play and athletic prowess redefined the point guard position throughout a dominant era of professional basketball.

During his final professional season, Westbrook represented the Sacramento Kings. He appeared in games for the franchise while averaging 15.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 6.7 assists per contest, proving he remained a productive contributor.

His sudden decision to step away from the sport caught many observers and peers by surprise. Given his solid statistical output, numerous basketball analysts and fellow players believed he had several productive years left.

Houston Rockets forward Kevin Durant admitted that Westbrook's retirement left him feeling emotional. The former teammate on the Oklahoma City Thunder shared his thoughts on the guard's surprising departure from the league.

"I thought Russ still had five or six more years left," Durant said of his longtime colleague. "He's an athletic body that can still impact the game positively. Congrats to him on an iconic career."

Despite hanging up his professional sneakers at the age of 37, Westbrook shows no signs of slowing down. He indicated that his anticipated induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame will hopefully occur soon.

However, individual basketball honors now take a backseat to his civic responsibilities. His primary focus remains firmly fixed on community development and championing the interests of his native city on the global stage.

"While I was playing, Los Angeles was my court," Westbrook reflected on his dual life as an elite athlete and a local philanthropist. "Basketball was something I was doing for fun. That was my outlet."

The former star acknowledged that being drafted and playing in the NBA was a privilege. Yet, he values his newfound freedom far more than the daily grind of professional team travel and rigorous game schedules.

Having more personal time in retirement allows him to be more present in local neighborhoods. Westbrook views this physical presence as far more important than any residual athletic fame or ongoing media attention.

As Los Angeles continues preparations to welcome the world for the 2028 Summer Olympic Games, Westbrook's vocal campaign for a role in the torch relay adds a high-profile local narrative to the unfolding event.

City officials and Olympic organizers will likely evaluate numerous prominent local figures for ceremonial duties. Westbrook's established humanitarian track record and deep roots in the community present a compelling case for inclusion.
